Welcome to the board. My name is Steph and I am owned by Baggy and her baby Whisper. My first lovie was a masked I got at PetsMart. She was a beauty but not tame by any means. What you want to find is a socialized bird. Some breeders handfeed babies. But that is no guarrantie he/she will be tame. I hope you find a bird you like. Any idea what breed of lovebird you want?
Steph
P.S. we need pictures when you get him.her.
A lot of poeple here will recommend a breeder. you get a better health garantie from a breeder and a hand fed baby which makes the socialising and taming a lot more easier.
You want a baby that is weaned and is eating on its own as well.
Unless you've had birds in the past and are used to train with them to tame and socialise them, it cn be very frustrating for both you and the bird.
a breeder will give you advise on your new adoption while a pet store is trying to make a sale.

Hi Taylor,
Welcome to the board. I am so glad you have found us, and also taht you are doing some research before getting a lovebird. I can tell you that none of us knew all that was entailed in caring for a lovie, and we all, myself included learn something new almost everyday.
You will find more real life information here than you could ever find in a book. One example is beak grinding. Almost everyone who gets a new lovie wants to know what the noise is that their lovie makes with their beak, usually when they are going to sleep. Beak grinding is a happy, contented noise, and is kind of like kids talking themselves to sleep. There's the first thing about lovies you will not find in a book :)
If you go to www.birdtalk.com, you will find a link there for breeders in or around your area. As the others have told you, you are looking for a socialized lovie. Handfed is not really necessary, but socialized would be good. Socialized means that the breeder spent time handling the baby from about age two weeks on, every day and got them used to human touch, and taught them to not fear human touch, so you can see why this would be preferred. I do however have a lovie myself that was not socialized, and have to tell you she is a sweetie pie. It did take some time, but worth every second :)
Let us know when you get your lovie.

Hi Taylor, and welcome. i think it is great that you are reading up (or "surfing" up) before you buy. Peachface is a species of lovebird, there are 9, but usually you only see peachface, fischers and masked lovebirds. I am not sure if anyone on this board has any of the other species. Peachfaces come in many different colors, some even have orange or white faces, but are still part of the peachface family. For some pics you can look here (you need to join imagestation to see the pics):

I just love these little birds, and good thing, as I now have 17. Only one and a half years ago we started with one (Mango), then added another (Tiki), then had to get another (Oliver), then thought we'd add a pair that turned out to both be female (Malibu and Roxy though we didnt keep Roxy), then got another pair (Saffron and Monet) so we could have some babies, then a mate (Rain) for Malibu, then we bought Rain's daughter Melody because we wanted a creamino and couldn't wait for Malibu and Rain to have one, and then we also from the same breeder took Mellow, whose previous owner did not want her. Then we bought a whiteface double factor violet (Jazz) cause he was pretty. And my friend bought one (Pop) and keeps it at our house cause it loves Mango.
Then we had two babies (Skittles and Che), then four more babies (Angel, Oreo, Roly and Poly).
Pheeeew! i think that is it!!! I only have so much room in my dining room for cages...
So yes, beware the darkside. And if you get one lovie, I bet you will get two, which is twice as nice as one!! 17 is a bit much though...
Let us know what you finally get, and post some pics in the photo forum!!!

Hi Taylor and welcome!
Like you, I had ZERO pet bird experience when I was offered an older lovebird 2 years ago. Fortunately, I found this forum and got a crash course in lovebirds and did adopt "Oliver." He is a "normal" peachface which is the most common coloring for lovies. There is much to learn and it's all here! I think it's great that you're doing your research first. All I want to add is that vet care is such an important part of good lovebird ownership. That and a lot of patience in the first few weeks/months with a new bird. Keep us posted! :)

I have heard that Tinker Toys is what some birds like to play with. Are they those toys that little kids play with? It's like they say, Love Birds are like your own kids!
