I thought this was kind of sad. He sounds like a happy, friendly little guy.
Wonder if she'd drop the rehoming "fee" if she's just going to take him to a rescue anyway.

I find it so interesting that people think lovebirds have "the most annoying call". Yeah, I get that they're louder than parakeets, but really, what are people thinking when they get birds? That they'll just sit there contentedly and not make a peep (pun!)? These people should really just get goldfish.
RAWR! I get so fired up when people don't seem to think before getting pets.
(side note - I really do understand that sometimes things happen, I swear! I'm not completely heartless! :) )

i agree, i don't think lovebird have the most annoying calls. i've heard macaws and cockatoos and they are loud. Loud, not annoying. i know, sometimes people should just get finches or something. Yeah, I understand lovies can drive you nuts w/ their chirping especially when you're trying to nap!!!!
speakin of parakeets, i saw some at the pet store today when i went to get food. wow, they are small. there was a million of them (ok, maybe more like 30 or 40). Very cute though and only 25 bucks!!!! I think Joey would end up eating it...haha, jk. I feel weird buying birds at petstores though, not knowing where they really came from. I don't want to support bird mills. I was too scared of going to see the Quaker parrot, canaries, finches, and cockatiels in case they had anything contagious that i could bring back to my fids. I could just be paranoid. My bf thinks I'm being over cautious and whatnot. But man, those parakeets were so cute, buzzing around and stuff. So little.

My last two birds were parakeets (and actually, before Kath they were the only species of bird I'd ever kept) and I always found them to be fun little animals. My first parakeet learned to give me a kiss before she could go back in her cage. The second one learned to "feed himself". The top of his cage came off really easily and I left his tub of food open, and he'd climb out and walk over and sit on the rim, happily chewing away until he was full. I thought he was a blast.
I agree about not knowing where they came from. The two I had came from Petsmart but they were pretty good birds. I think any bigger than that and you should definitely go breeder or at least hand fed ones. My parakeets were bitey and Kath isn't bitey at all.
Lovebirds are a little bigger and louder but they also have much more personality, I think. My parakeets were pretty happy to just sit in their cages but Kath will have NONE of that!

that's good to know cuz I wouldn't mind getting a parakeet or two. it'd be nice to have other types of birds. i've read just so many articles on petsmart and their issues w/ birds.
well, i wrote to that lady and she's gonna take him to a pet store. sad. poor little guy. I really hope he finds a new great home. it breaks my heart knowing here is a tame, friendly little bird and now he's going to a petstore where he prob will lack interaction, and who knows what kind of home he's going to. I can only hope it works for him to find a new forever home.

I believe the best response was for the Birdboard to provide this person with various adoption agencies. Personally, I get a bit leary when someone joins a website only to decline ownership of a parrot after only 15 posts. While $60 doesn't exactly sound bad for a lovie who comes cage included, purchasing a one with a possible 30 year lifespan is too good to be true. ........Ah well, who knows, i've been wrong in the past.

can people just send their lovebirds or any bird to a petstore??? Cuz that's what she's doing.

I personally think that thread is "bogus". While it's not impossible for a lovebird to live to be 30, I haven't heard of one living past 21.
And hives? From the bird? I'm not saying it is impossible, 'cause I know down in a pillow gives me the itches....but if she loves him so much, how can she totally be sure it is the bird and perhaps not HER down pillow or comforter giving her the issue?
Has anyone heard of anyone being allergic to birds? My mother in law is allergic to every living thing out there, and she is fine with Cherry!

Yes, as long as the pet shop can legally sell the bird they are taking in.

I don't know what she is allergic to. i asked if it's the dander. I didn't have the guts to ask her if she's really sure it's the bird or if there's something she can do about it. She has a parrotlet too so I don't know what that is all about. Can there be that big of a difference since parrotlets and lovies are similar in size.
I think she's for real. She feels really bad cuz she's the main care taker of him. I just feel bad for the little guy.
I didn't know you could just send them to a petstore and have them resold.

Unfortunately, it's quite possible that part of her story is true, such as the part where this lovebird needs a home. Could be either she's gotten into a situation where her birds don't co-exist, or having two is simply too much to handle. It could also be she felt her reasons for giving this bird up fell short of moral substance. Certainly, the hives reaction is somewhat questionable/rare as generally alergies will first present themselves in the form of respiratory distress. Those with asthma for instance may tolerate one bird for years whereas two may send them over the edge. Honestly, I don't really like harboring the type character that scrutinizes or judges others. If wrong, sometimes poeple like me can do more harm than good. Then again, having once worked around abused and abandoned animals, i've often had to question the ethics of certain individuals. I think if your truly interested in any animals being put up for adoption, its alway best to thoroughly examine their origin. Unlike in the past, with todays technology we can usually find enough information necessary to make the right choice. You may in fact call or email the pet store she's refering to and inquire about a recent adoptee lovebird being brought in. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks this bird will once again be up for adoption at a similar price which "includes" a health exam.
