I am unfortunately looking for a home for two peach-faced lovebirds. I’m hoping that you can give me guidance on how to find a quality home for them. They are both beautiful birds, but I inherited them from my roommate and they do not work well with my migraines (quite quite loud for my apartment). I am not sure what their sex is (should I have the test done before seeking a home?) but they are clearly very bonded to each other. Both are in need of training. I talk to them regularly, and they are used to people, but both are currently cage aggressive and will only sit on my shoulder on occasion. I live in Portland, Oregon. Any ideas and tips on how I can make sure they birds go to a loving home? I have mixed feelings about giving them to just anyone from craigslist.

Thanks so much!

Hi! I'm also near Portland, and wanted to say welcome to the board!

I'm sorry you have to re-home the little guys, and I hope you find great new "parents" for them.

you can try listing them in different bird forums to see if anyone is willing to take them in. i always feel like people in forums are more trustworthy than any old joe off craigs list though there are good people on craig's list too. i'm sorry you can't keep them and hope they'll find good homes too.

Thank you DKD for caring about finding appropriate homes for these two lovebirds.

As for having them sexed..........At this point I would consider that an option, whereas depending on age and how well bonded they are the only concern would be the possibilty of them breeding. The usual scenario here being,.... should you have 2 males/you'll have no eggs......Two females/lots of eggs/no babies/and maybe a little turmoil where eventually they may need separate cages......Male and a female/a rather large family in no time flat if your not careful. Otherwise, provided these issues have been previously rectified, my only advice is that you do your best to keep them together if they are indeed well bonded.

If your still unsure about all this, try to give us some more details, such as age, or how long your roomate had them before passing them onto you. That may help us find the best answers. Best wishes for all of you. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and advice everyone! My green peach-faced love bird must be at least 7 or so (when I think back on his ownership history) and the yellow Pied love bird I think is only about 3. They love snuggling, and are very sweet and playful with each other, even when squawking loudly. I’m feel very uncomfortable separating them. They have been in the same cage for a year, and so far, there haven’t been any eggs on the scene. That said, they don’t seem entirely uninterested in making them!

Howdy and Welcome to the board. I'm sorry you are having to rehome your birdies. It is never an easy thing to do.

I live in Portland, but have almost 30 lovies with 8 being former foster birds who are looking like permanent flock members. So I have no room. I am attaching a link to a local (Oregon) listserv for all thing parrot and bird. You can join the group and post about your lovies. The board is pretty active and I've had several positive interactions with the person who runs the listserv. I bet you will find someone intersted. I would just be careful and make your wishes for a new home very explicit and find out as much as you can about anyone who is interested.

You may also want to call the Avian Medical Center in Lake Oswego. They will post birds that are available for adoption in their clinic. There is also the Rose City Exotic Bird Club who may be able to give you some suggestions.

good Luck:)
