Okay, so last Friday I went to an all-day training with everyone from my company. During lunch at the table, one of the women sitting at my table asked me if I have kids. I told her no, but that I've got two lovebirds who are my babies. She went on to tell me that she used to have lovebirds and the last one they got was from the Humane Society. The lady's daughter wanted it. They named him/her Peachie. The lady said they quarantined Peachie and then put her in with the rest of their lovebirds (3 - 4 of them). Peachie killed them all.

So now Peachie is all alone and no one interacts with her because she's not tame and bites. She gets seed and water - that's about it. Her toys don't get rotated because no one wants to stick their hand in the cage. How do they clean her cage, you ask? They hose it down with Peachie inside... The only interaction Peachie gets is when the lady checks on her to see that she's still alive.

As nice as I could, I told the lady how a bird SHOULD be cared for by just telling her what I feed Mika and Kano, how I let them out to play, and all that jazz. After I told her, she said, "Do you want another lovebird? You can have Peachie!!" Throughout the whole conversation, she told me I can have her like 10 times. I asked her if maybe she could take Peachie to her classroom as a pet and she could have the "company" of the preschoolers, but she said there's no place in her class to put a cage where the kids can't reach - and of course she doesn't want Peachie to bite any of the kids. My classroom (totally different campus as hers) has room, but I can't be leaving Peachie there at night and on weekends since there is NO light and NO ventilation (wooden jealousies that have to remain closed if we're not there) and it's just not fair to her. There's no way I could leave the A/C on either, 'cause I'd get in trouble from the school for wasting energy.

I told her I definitely couldn't take her home because my bf would kill me, since we live in a no-pet place. Of course, trying to remind myself of this doesn't help any and I've been thinking about Peachie constantly since then. I just don't know why they don't take her back to the Humane Society if they can't care for her... I thought about telling her I'd take Peachie in and then take her back to the Humane Society, but I don't know how often this family visits the Humane Society and I'm sure they'd notice it's the same bird since it's an Orangefaced (according to her - she said, "It has a bright orange face and green body") and not just the typical Normal PF.

Now yesterday I went to a staff meeting with just the people in my "cluster" and brought Mika and Kano with me. Another teacher asks me if I want two more lovebirds!! She said she's got two that are not tame... I think she said they're both rescues. I don't know what conditions they're living in or anything about them because as soon as she asked me I told her I can't take any more because I live in a no-pet building and I can't be paying for two more vet bills. I didn't want to hear about them because the more I hear (like I did with Peachie), the more I'll want to take them.

It's really hard 'cause there are no other bird rescues here on O'ahu except for the Humane Society, according to on-line searching. There's a rescue on Maui, but that doesn't help me any. I sort of "solved" my no-pet building problem by bringing my babies with me to work. It works out for all four of us 'cause my bf and I don't have to worry and wonder if they're chirping their heads off just as the property manager happens to walk by or something (they come often just to check up on the building and show units), and Mika and Kano get even more out-of-cage time in my classroom. They've got a flight cage with a bunch of toys on the shelf behind my desk, but they pretty much hang out on the play gym on top of the cage - the saltine box is a real HIT!! My kids LOVE to look at them and are really great about looking at them from the other side of my desk and they take extra care to use even softer "indoor voices" 'cause they don't want to scare the birds (I told them Mika and Kano won't want to come back if they get scared) - it's so cute and a great teaching/learning tool for them!! But unlike the other three birds I want to take in, I take Mika and Kano home with me once I leave the class...

Now I'm gonna continuously be thinking of THREE lovebirds that are in need of a loving home!! URGH!!!

To those of you here on O'ahu, would you be interested...? I can do my best to find out more info if anyone is interested...

Maya you want to try to change the font of your post :).

Linda, in summary, people who have lovies who treat them very cruely (hosing the cage down to clean it while the bird is still inside it because the bird bites) keep trying to palm the birds off to Maya. So she is looking for people from hawaii who would be interested in taking in these poor lovies because only a real bird carer will be able to take care of these birds and give them the life they deserve :)

Looking for O'ahu people who may be interested in some lovebirds that aren't under good care currently.

i think people are just looking for an easy way out and see that you have birds and treat them good so they want to throw it onto you. you guys don't have bird rescue places? I think we only have 2 here. i don't know, i think your font looks fine to me.

Yes, there seems to be no shortage of luvies on Oahu. I am inadvertently part of the problem because all my attempts to stop my luvies from breeding have been unsuccessful. My luvies' first clutch went to the humane society. The rest I have given away to volunteer adopters.

These stories are not surprising nor do they only occur on Oahu. Parrots are third in terms of pets in the US and most people have no idea what they are getting into or how to care for their birds. This is exactly why I boil eggs and return them that are laid in my house. Lovies will breed and breed and breed and breed if you don't stop them. While it may seem cruel to not let eggs hatch out, I can't imagine the suffering that would be occuring if I let my birds hatch out all their eggs.

:2cents: If you are interested in helping these birds, and you cannot take them yourself, you could take them to the Humane Society.

I think it is unlikely that people who are currently trying to get rid of their birds would be at the Humane Society looking for more.

At least then the birds would have a chance of being placed in a better environment.

Just my :2cents:, but I would be very careful in bringing in new birds to any flock no matter how bad they need homes. You will see there is NO shortage or end to birds in need, and no matter how many you take in, there will be more in worse shape. Flock numbers also get big quick and many of us usually get in over our head before we realize we have TOO MANY BIRDS. Often, more long term positive outcomes can come in the form of education and assistance.
Of course, I say this having way to many birds and many of which are fosters or rescues.

Good Luck:)

most people have no idea what they are getting into or how to care for their birds. .

I had my car lubed today & had Gussie with me. The young man who serviced my car was very nice & interested in Gussie. I then learned he had just gotten a "really mean cockatoo" and a "bunch of peachies"--who are "laying eggs like crazy" from a friend who moved away. We clarified that he actually has a cockatiel (who sounds like she is taming down already) and several peach faced lovebirds. I told him about boiling the eggs but he wants the babies 'cause his relatives want them. He asked if you have to take birds to a special vet. (Give the man a star for thinking about a vet). I gave him my E-mail address & encouraged him to contact me so I could help him what what needs to be done in the near future. He may turn up here--if his birds are lucky! He doesn't have a computer but does have access to one at his mom's. I really liked this young man & he seemed genuinely interested in doing things the right way. He told me how he's been trying to interact with the cockatiel & he has good instincts. Just wish he'd started out with a smaller flock!

Okay, so I got the pair today. I want to start this post off by telling you guys that as I was driving to my parents house they had sexual relations right in my car!! :omg: I was like, "Stooooooooop, stoooooooooop!! No no no no no!! Stoooooooooooop!!" But they wouldn't!! :rotfl My car seat felt violated, to say the least.

The female is a Normal PF and the male is a PF Olive. Their borrowed cage was sad and pathetic, small and rusted. No toys and just seed and water. Oh, and a tiny finch-size nestbox. The hen is laying on two eggs. I candled them and one is infertile and the other one was fertile, but I think there's too much air space in the egg (like more than 1/3) for it to be viable. The previous person handled the cage a lot, putting it outside during the day and inside at night so I'm guessing all that movement did something to it.

I went out and got what I could afford (another flight cage) and gave them some of Mika and Kano's toys. I gave them Mika and Kano's Volkman seed mix and ZuPreem pellet combo and they ate it right up. For birds that were only given seed, the male ate the dried fruit right up!! They'll be staying at my parents house for the time being.

Anyway, here are some pictures of them!! I named the mommy Foster 1 and the daddy Foster 2, just so I don't get attached to them... :(

i don't understand people who get pets w/o bothering to learn about their real needs!

What she told me today was that the Normal PF fell out of it's nest as a baby, in the tree right in front of her classroom. Then her neighbor gave her one of his lovebirds, the Olive, because he told her a single lovebird will die early (don't worry, I gave her the 411). The Olive has an open band that just says "BGUY" on it... I'm wondering if that stands for "Bird Guy," the man who has all those parrots and does the tourist photo taking at Aloha Tower and such?

It sucks 'cause some people do have good intentions - and I think this woman did because she kept wanting to make sure they were going to a good home - but good intentions are not enough.

they are very lucky birds :).. they are in the same cage as elmo has.. but hers is black :)

maya_exquisite

Hehehe... "in a non-attached way." Yeah, I just laid there in my old bedroom at my parents house staring at them and watching them. They were very active. :) Daddy fed mommy several times, mommy b****ed at daddy several times, daddy kept pooping in the bath bowl I gave them... hehe.

Yeah, now I have three of these cages. Mika and Kano have a purple one in my classroom, a blue one at home, and this third blue one I dunno what to do with yet. After Foster 1 and 2 have gone, I'm thinking of maybe putting the two blues side by side (after good cleaning, of course) on my breakfast nook so that they'll have that whole area to play at home. Gotta talk it over with the bf, though, 'cause our breakfast nook is our designated "cr*p" shelf where we throw our mail, papers, the jewelry I wore that day, his hats, and lots more junk. Then I usually "organize" the breakfast nook over the weekend and the cycle happens all over again. If the birds were there, we'd end up throwing our junk on the floor!! :rotfl

Don't worry, they're not fertile!! I was thinking the same thing - if the eggs were fertile I don't know if I could've let them go!! :rotfl

And yeah, good luck preventing future breeding. 20 minutes into me having them, they had sex in my car!!! :omg: I yelled, he didn't stop. I jiggled the cage, he didn't stop. He's lucky I was on the freeway or else I would've pulled over to stick my hand in the cage!!!
