View Full Version : Female becoming aggressive toward mate!
Hi there! I have a mated pair of lovebirds. The female has always been slightly aggressive toward her mate at times but more as a warning to him to leave her alone. Lately though she seems extra aggressive and has bitten him quite badly several times. However, they also still seem to love each other and groom and feed each other regularly. When separated they call to each other noisily. I also have one other lovebird, a male, in a separate cage that is about one year old. Must the mated pair be separated permanently or is she just being so aggressive because she is broody? Could the other male bird somehow be the cause of her being more aggressive than usual? I do not let them out together (the female and the other male) but do let the two males out together or else just the mated pair. Any advice would be great! They seem so sad separated :(

As long as your male can get away from your female when she is being nasty, and you don't see any real injuries, it is most likely not a problem. I sometimes see my mated pairs squabbling a bit but it is generally quite brief and no real damage is caused.
If you are greatly concerned because this fighting is serious and escalating, or you have seen blood, then I would separate them.
Only you can see what is really happening.
And, are you positive this is a male/female pair? If it is possible that you have two hens I would separate them. Spring is coming and all of the birds are getting hormonal.
When I had some of the grates outside on Saturday for cleaning I had four little hens trying to shred their paper tray liners as fast as possible. They want to make nests!
Yes, it is definitely a male and female and she has drawn blood multiple times! They are separated now but it's getting difficult with trying to keep everyone separated and putting up with the noise of the mated pair calling to each other. I don't know what went wrong...they used to be pretty loving to each other. I need a Cesar Milan for birds!
