Hello Lovebird buddies,
I am moving from South Korea, back to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada in September and bringing my pet lovebird Peppero with me. If anyone lives in or near Winnipeg can they advise me of a good place to purchase a cage.
I want to get a good sized cage at least 30 inches wide.
I have been checking prices on the net and wonder if perhaps there are some used ones for sale in the area or a shop that has reasonable prices.
I did read on the net that there is a Parrot Club of Manitoba. I plan to attend their meetings when I settle in, however their email address isn't working at present so I couldn't direct this question to them.
Thanks for any advice you can give me and it would be nice to know someone who also shares the hobby of having a lovebird!

I live ten minutes outside of Winnipeg. :) I believe I bought my lovebird cage from Pet Traders (on Portage) for $69.99. Most of their cages are very reasonably priced, so I'd recommend checking them out first. I also bought a cage from Petcetera (Regent avenue), but ended up using it for my budgie, as putting both lovebirds in it would have been a tad cramped. But that cage cost $49.99. I can't really think of any other stores at the moment (Petland is usually way overpriced), but I'm thinking Pet Traders is going to be your best bet.

And yes, you should come to the Parrot Club meetings. I've actually only ever been to the one they had last month (they have one every third friday of each month), but I plan on joining soon, as it seems like a lot of fun.

Anyhow, I own two baby lovebirds which I bought last week, as well as a nine year old english budgie, and a four month old regular budgie.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks so much for the reply,,, I am glad to hear that you are relatively new to owning a lovebird as well. I have had Peppero for about 8 months.. and have begun to develope an interest in keeping birds. Not many, but i know I would like to one day get either a Parrotlet or an Eclectus or both :)
I do have some bad news that I got this week though... the people at Inspections Canada, originally told me last year that I couldn't bring Peppero back with me, as there is a ban on birds from Asia, but then I contacted them a few months ago and they said the ban was lifted,, then I started the procedure, as I am returning in September, and after I got the paperwork done, they tell me the ban has returned. Sounds like I am getting the run-around.... so I wonder what to do with Peppero. As you know, lovebirds aren't exactly a low-maintenance pet and I want him to be well taken care of... Perhaps I will return him to the pet store. It's too bad if they put him in a cage with birds that aren't so tame or potty trained like he is....
Oh, regarding the cage, thanks for letting me know about pet traders, they seem to have reasonable prices.
I will be living in East St. Paul, just outside of Winnipeg, so I think that is not far from the pet store you mentioned on Regent street.
Do you know which part of town the Parrot Club meeting location is at?

Aww, that's really a shame about the ban. Even though you haven't owned him for very long, I'm sure it will be very hard to part with him. I don't know how I'd do it with any of my pets. If you have a good friend that is willing to take care of him, I'm sure that'd be better then returning him to a petstore. Or if you can find a breeder that takes in birds.

The Parrot Club meetings are held at St. Album's Angelican church, at the corner of Osbourne and Rathgar. I'm not exactly sure where St. Paul is, so I can't say which store you'd be closest to. I'll try and think up a few more stores for you to check out. And if you're looking for more birds, I can recommend you the breeder that I bought my lovebirds from.

Thanks for the info,,,, I still have hope that the ban will be lifted before I leave,,, I told the people at Inspections Canada that I would inquire at the end of August, in case things change..... *fingers crossed*

East St Paul is just outside the Perimetre Highway... at the end of Henderson Highway in East Kildonan area.. Not far from Kildonan Place mall and the Pet store near there. This area has only been developed recently,,,,

Sure I would love to find out more about Lovebird breeders in the area,,, I would like to get a bird that has been handfeed,, and socialized from an early age. I have no idea about Peppero's upbringing, as the conditions at the pet store I got him from were terrible by western standards. He was three months old and somewhat tame but fearful. I am not sure if I have gained his trust as he still seems to shiver when I hold him and doesn't come to me much,, though I have taught him not to bite and he is about 80% accurate with potty training... I imagine that a good breeder would provide me with a bird that is more confident and social *I hope*

Thanks again for the advice.. and I hope we can meet at the parrot club meeting in the future.

I hope that you'll be able to bring him with you.

Ah, I know where you're talking about, although I haven't ever been out that far of the city that ways. The Petcetera is near the mall, and there is also a Petland near the Wal-mart on Regent, as well.

Both of my baby birds were hand fed. The breeder I got them from hand feeds all of her lovebird and cockatiel babies, as far as I know. She's a very nice lady, and extremely helpful. I know that some of her other lovebird pairs had eggs when I was there last week, so she should be getting some more babies soon enough. When I was asking around for lovebird breeders, she was recommended at least twice (I actually don't think there were any other breeders that anyone knew of who I asked). But when you're ready to get another bird, I can give you her number and whatnot, or if you would like to phone her sooner and put your name down for a baby. But she doesn't live in Winnipeg. She lives in Warren, which isn't too far away. Definitely worth the trip, though.

Anyways, yes, I plan on going to those meetings whenever I can, and look forwarding to seeing you there. :)

As I mentioned before I am hoping to get another bird, it's either a lovebird (to replace Peppero), a parrotlet or an eclectus. There is a good breeder of eclectus in manitoba, i found on the web, (www.parrotplace.ca) but i am reading up on this species and they seem to be a little demanding regarding their diet,,, I am worried I won't feed it properly as I currently hate cooking even for myself. But they are beautiful birds and supposedly are tame, quiet and gentle. I don't know however what it would be like caring for a larger bird, so I want to meet eclectus owners at the parrot club and find out stuff like what size cage, how messy they are etc.
BTW do you know of any parrotlet breeders in Manitoba? i guess i can try and find this out by talking to people at the meeting,,,,, but if you know anything that would be great!
Thanks again!

Eclectus are beautiful, and yes, quite a bit more demanding than a lovebird. I'd love to have a larger bird (Sun Conure comes to mind) but I don't have the room for one yet, nor do my parents really enjoy the sound that they make. :(

And actually, the meeting that I went to, one of the members had just purchased a parrotlet. After seeing it, I've been wanting one for myself. She said that it was very difficult to find, and I believe she's hoping to find another so that she can start breeding them, but I'm not entirely sure. There's actually a store on Main St. (Pet Centre Bird Shop and Aquariums) that breed them, I believe (or so it was written on the glass in the breeding bird room), but I'm not sure if I'd buy a bird from them...I am hoping to find English budgies to breed, and I noticed some there. But when I went in to look at them (all the birds are behind glass in a separate room; you can still see them, but you can't enter the room without permission), quite a few of them looked very sick, and a few more looked very stressed out (feathers plucked). The place looks a little run down, and smells musty. But, you can still check it out. They also have supplies. I'll try and see if I can find out some more information for you, but I won't be able to attend the meeting this month. :(

Pretty funny post. I'm in Linden Woods. :D

I got my birds from a place on Main St. I believe it's called JW Bird Shop & Aquarium. 1034 Main Street, I believe. They have tonnes of cages of EVERY size (up to like 4'x4'x5', maybe even bigger), and good prices.

Hello DJ
So you are from the Winnipeg area too? I am not familiar with Linden Woods... anyway, if i can bring Peppero back with me I will want to get a cage, so I will get in touch with you about that, probably in late September if all works according to plan....
I am also hoping to one day soon get a baby Eclectus parrot, so I would be interested in a large cage for him as well...
Thanks for letting me know..
