Hey everyone!

I know that this is mostly for lovies, and I realize that the chances of finding someone to take this poor creature is low seeing the price, but I figured I could at the very least post here.

There is a new pet store in my town (Miramichi NB) and when I went in to check it out, imagine my surprise! I saw a blue and gold macaw hanging around outside her cage on a huge playpen. There was a sign warning that she might bite, which prompted me to wonder why they let her out with kids running around any moment. Still, I was able to get right up next to her and she didn't bite me, only made a bit of a show of "don't touch me". Her feathers were all bedraggled and she didn't seem very happy to me. :( Poor baby. I would have bought her and brought her right home but I don't have the funds, and my husband would kill me.

She's 1800$ canadian, I'm not sure if that's including the cage. I didn't find out her age either; all the staff there knew was that her name was "Sierra" and that if she knew you well enough, she was a sweet thing who'd ride on your shoulder and give kisses. Her feathers were in such a state, I'm still reeling from it. She looked like she hadn't been properly preened in months. Her beak was fraying a bit near the tip. Her feet looked okay at least, and her eyes focused on you with clarity so she wasn't dull or sick.

So if anyone has the money, heart, and home to accept a poor Macaw, and is close enough or has the means to get her to you from here, please drop me a line and I can put you in contact with the store or even mediate the purchase if needed.

Thanks again everyone!

Oh I just hate stories like these:very_sad: I know there are always going to be pet stores & there are always going to be birds in pet stores but I still hate it thinking they are there waiting for a loving person to come along. That being said, I know of a pet store in my area where the owners are AMAZING and treat their birds like their babies so it isn't all bad everywhere!!!

I hope the macaw finds a home soon & gets all the love in the world!!!

Hi Kween,
You should post your message on parrothaven.ca (the Atlantic Canada Bird Rescue Society).

Maybe someone there can help out. They're are a really good bunch of people, and always willing to help a bird in need.

The sad reality is that buying this bird will only ensure that more are treated just as poorly. I hate these stories and conditions of these birds to no end, but all I can do is put my head down and walk past. This is the very reason I spend less and less time in any petstores that have birds or animals. I refuse to support these stores with my money in anyway. Of course, I've saved birds this way but I can't save them all and I didn't save the bird replaced by the one I bought:very_sad::very_sad:.

As tough as it is, I agree 100% with Laura. ....... One thing you generally won't find, are pet shops themselves making recommendations for rescue organizations, as they will often bank on the fact that some customers will feel sorry for these parrots ultimately leading to their sale.

Although it would be wrong to accuse this or any other store of harboring a neglect for profit attitude, baring in mind they may continue to do business based mostly on profit instead of a parrots welfare is something to keep in mind. ..... 1800 is a lot of money for a parrot. I'm sure this parrot is worth every penny. Finding a good home on the other hand, is priceless.

Flip, thanks for the tip, I'll post this on that website and hope they can somehow do something to help. D: I also agree with Laura and micheal. T.T It's sad, but saving this one parrot won't save them all; however, I'm under the impression that this macaw was given to the store to sell by someone in the area. I've never SEEN a live macaw in a pet store before, so I am hoping that this isn't something they will often get in stock. D: Poor creature.

This is sad, and I know how you feel. It's hard to turn away, but it's a hard deal overall, because what can we do!? Birds have a hard time of it in the pet industry, and big birds are a whole different story.

Rao my B&G who mysteriously appeared in my backyard, is missing a bit of her toe, and another toe seems to have been broken and healed over badly. When he was smuggled to Trinidad from Guyana, Ammy was handled badly, and had two disfigured toes and a scarred beak. It breaks my heart over and over again to think of what they endured, especially when I have witnessed firsthand how loving and eager and intelligent they are.

I know of a petstore around here, they've had a scarlet macaw for several years now in much the same condition, only here the owner of the pet store "loves" him to much to sell him and tells any interested customer he's a bad bird, and how difficult it is to take care of a large bird. Of course she is right that a macaw is a big commitment but most willing people are able to manage, but from what I see he is a sweetheart. If she really loved him she would find him a good home rather then the back of a grimy petstore or adopt him herself :(
