So I have had my lovebird peaches for about a year and half now and I really want to get her another bird to be with. I also was wondering since I recently found out peaches was a girl if it would be best to pair her up with a male or female?
By the way: I would be buying a bigger cage and introducing them gradually.

Hi, I guess that is going to depend on whether you want to have and are prepared for lovebird babies. ;) You could opt to boil the eggs and return them but either way it's something you'll need to decide.
I have 2 birds that are females but there is one lovebird and one ysgcc and they are kept in separate cages. That way they each have companionship and there isn't an issue with not getting along.
I'm sure others will chime in on this too...

There's a good bird store in Lakewood, CO that sells lovebirds called "Bird World." It's on 20th and Wadsworth (northwest side of the intersection in the shopping center; it's a small store). I recently purchased a male lovebird from them whom I named "Buddy Boo." He's a very pretty pied peachface who's healthy and happy. All their lovebirds have been hand-fed. They are very knowledgable and can help you with the right selection. Right now Buddy Boo is in a separate cage that sits next to my other female lovebird so they can get used to each other gradually. I take them out of their cages a couple times a day to visit together with me in the bathroom (neutral territory). So far it's going well. I'm hoping they will eventually be in the same cage together for companionship.
I wouldn't buy any kind of bird from my local pet store-- he hand feeds them, that's it. he buys babies for $20.00 or $25.00 from a lady in town. hand feeds them- triples the purchase price and that's it. their scared to death and not what I consider healthy. I look for long standing reputable breeders that are willing to deliver them to me since I'm disabled and can't drive. I wish you well with both of yours patience is the key, I do know that-- I've left mine seperate but close enough to see and hear each other for 1 or 2 months before putting them together to be sure.it has worked out for me so far. again good luck. good bye. Rob, I'm a new member, Hi.

While I would not purchase birds from many pet shops, there still are some that do very well with their birds. Some pet shops are their own suppliers (they breed their own birds) and their personnel really do know what they are talking about. I know we hear a lot about poor shops but it's really not fair to prejudge all and say they are all bad. I paid top dollar for my 2 macaws when I bought them from a pet shop but both were well socialized and the employees took a lot of time with me to make sure I knew exactly what I was getting into!

As Linda said, not all pet shops are created equal. Many shops are open and run by people who care and wish to provide an alternative to the poor ones.
That being said... I recommend checking sites like kijiji.com, hoobly.com, and others- I have met excellent reputable breeders that way. I insist on getting to know the people I'm going to purchase a bird from, meeting them and seeing how their birds are housed- before making my ultimate decision, but its one way to meet local breeders. You can also check local rescues.
If you are willing to branch out, there are airlines that do an excellent job transporting birds. If they service your airport, you may be able to seek a bird out of area if all else fails!

As far as I know two girls don't get along as well as two males would. My two males were in LOVE. I am constantly checking hoobly and kijiji, even craigslist (although craigslist make sure you REALLY do your homework and ask very specific questions. You should anyway but sometimes craigslist folks really aren't doing it for the sake of the birds and more for the money end of the deal). There is one pet store around my area that, as far as Ive heard, is amazing. There is always the pet stores that are sad and poorly upkept, but that doesnt mean they all are!!
Good luck in your search - keep us posted!!

I too am looking for a lovebird male. I have been looking at Anderson Aviary http://andersenaviary.com/index.html, has anybody had any experience with them? I emailed them earlier to ask a few questions. They seem to specialize in small birds which makes me feel good.
Any chance anybody is breeding Dutch Blue pieds in Colorado/Wyoming? I would love to talk.

Thanks everyone.
I have been searching my animal shelter, kijiji.com, and craigslist on a daily basis.I have a tendency to rush into things and so I'm trying to wait until the right bird comes along, that's why I haven't looked much into breeders. But I think I am going to check out that Bird World store. Also I found the cage I wanted and then I waited a week and they bumped up the price by $30.00. So what do you guys think about this cage?

That is my absolute favorite cage...
however, do not be taken in by the "Small" it is a BIG cage for a small bird! Its a palace for a lovebird, well-made, sturdy, has locking doors, perfect bar-spacing, and a very convenient shelf for supplies.
