I live in an old Farm house and have spiders everywhere! Does anyone have a good organic or other way to get rid of them without harming my precious, house full of birdies?

A HUGE THANK YOU to ALL in advance!

I did a google search and came up with this:

I've been told by pest control companies that spiders are the hardest creatures to control, as many pesticides just are not effective against them. My solution to getting rid of them and keeping them gone is to vaccuum them away and just keep after them. I've learned to keep an eye out for brown recluses, as I was bitten several times by one of those as I slept one night. I didn't realize what happened until the skin on my hip started to turn black..... Nasty creatures!

Thank you, Linda! Much appreciated!

Linda- I was also bitten in bed by a brown recluse when I was living on the West Coast. It was a near-death experience that took a chunk the size of a large grapfruit out of my thigh muscle. I was delerious and when I first sought treatment- I had no medical insurance at the time- they wanted to cut my leg off! I left AMA and ended up with a horrible infection. I'm lucky to have my leg and to be alive at all. Frightening creatures! Whats scarier, is that I thought I'd left these things behind, moving back to Massachusetts, and the next spring after I moved home (2006) my stepfather was bitten by one at my sister's softball game in western MA.

Spiritwolf-

I recently had a recommendation for a device that emits a frequency that keeps spiders and other critters away. I don't know what it is called, but I'm sure with some googling, you'll be able to track it down. The frequency only bothers insects and rodents, not birds, dogs, cats, or people. Benny had a spider in his cage that scared the crap out of him and has apparently given him night terrors.

Thank you, Enko! I am so glad that you and Linda are okay now! I have a good friend who was in Jacksonville and got bit by a brown recluse and almost lost his hand. He came out of it okay, but it was a tough situation for a while!

Oh great!! We have those here???? geez, I didn't think we did. I grew up just over an hour away over in NY and we never had them over there. I never once heard of anyone ever seeing or getting bitten by one there or here!
We get some spiders in the house here sometimes, but not very often. I saw a couple that were a bit on the big side and were real ugly!:omg: Our worst pest here though is mice in the winter! Bugs are tough because you can't use any pesticides around the birds. We just were infested with fruit flies here about a week ago. Woke up one morning and there were tons of them! We found what was causing them though.....an old bag of potatoes that we had forgotten about sitting on the bottom of a bakers rack. We got rid of those, but then you still have a whole buch of them flying around in the house! They even went into the bathroom.....they stuck by anyplace with a drain....apparently they can live on the slime in a drain if they have no food! Nice, huh? I did spray in the bathroom.....away from the birds and shut the door, but we had to use traps and just try to kill them in the kitchen!

I feel for you, Kim!

I had a top pop off a microworm culture that got infested with fruit flies this past week and we still aren't rid of them. They're a pain, but at least they don't scare the birds!

We get house centipedes and the occasional little spider here, but nothing big like we get at my families' places west of here, and NOTHING like what we had in Washington. We had funnel webs all over the place around the house in WA and I never knew that meant DANGER! I've never seen a brown recluse or a hobo recluse spider around here, but my stepfather was in the hospital for a month after his bite. He killed it on his leg after it bit him at a softball tournament in Great Barrington.
