Hello!

My name is Eliza and I am hopefully going to be sharing my apartment with a lovebird in the near future. I am going to visit with a local breeder (who has been SO kind to me) over the weekend. I'm a bit nervous but very excited. I haven't been owned by a bird since I had budgies nearly a decade ago. I'm looking forward to this new experience.

Hmmm... I can't think of much more to say at the moment (my work day is just now winding down) but I wanted to say hello before I signed off for the evening. I've been browsing the site for a few days now and have really enjoyed the site. Now I see that even more information is available, for which I am truly grateful.

If you have any tips/precautions for me as a new owner, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Hope that all is well!

Welcome aboard -e-!!

My only advice is to thoroughly read any and all threads here on this amazing forum. There is always something to learn or to improve on with lovebirds and you won't find a better more informative online site than this one !!
I'm owned by just 15 lovebirds at the moment (breeding season is close...) and one Green cheek conure.
We request a good camera and GREAT PICS !!!
Hope to see you around the board.

Welcome Eliza! How exciting that you are thinking of getting a lovebird. I got my first lovie 6 years ago and now I have 19 along with a Meyer's Parrot. They are so much fun and I love them more than I thought I could ever love a pet.

There is a lot of great information in the "your attention please" section, more specifically there is Robin's new owner guide which is great if you will be bringing home a new friend soon. I hope you are drilling the breeder you are speaking with. If you are and she's still friendly I would think that's a positive thing.

Good Luck and hope to see you around :D

Hi -e and welcome to our community!
I'm originally from NJ but I moved to FL in 1990. I'm owned by quite a number of lovebirds and I enjoy every minute of it. I've got an adorable youngster in a nestbox right now that's about 3.5 weeks old. I've been having a good time taking this one out of the box every day.

We're looking forward to hearing about your new lovebird when you get him/her. :)

Hi and welcome!!! :D

Good for you, finding a (this) forum before you bring your lovie home! I got a two day "crash course" here just before adopting my older lovie and I had ZERO pet bird experience so every single thing I read was all new information to me! I could never have done it without this forum!

I agree.....read as much as you can here and that will be the most helpful thing right now and once you have your baby, ask questions and we will be very happy to help! :) Glad to hear that your breeder has been so helpful and nice to you. I've had a great experience with my breeder and she is now a member of this forum, "Rubygem!" I bought two baby boys from her in July. What I found out, after having my adopted lovie, Oliver, for two years, is that ONE just wasn't enough! :D Since Oliver was around 7 or 8 when we adopted him, I am now learning all about young lovebirds. They are very, very different in behavior from Oliver and so much fun! :) Oliver is a wonderful little birdie but very laid back....the new kids are NOT laid back and full of energy!

Look forward to seeing you around the board! :D

Hi Eliza,

Welcome to the board. I will look forward to hearing all about your new little one when you get him/her home.

This board is a wonderful place to learn how to care for your lovie, and there is information here you will never find in books. Real like experience is what you will find here. That and the fact that we care very much about each others fids as well as each other in what makes us a flock/family.

C-ya around the board :)

Welcome to the board, and we are really glad you found us.... :D

Hope to hear more about your lovie when you get to bring it home...and speaking form the breeder’s side, we get nervous when it comes to meeting new people that will be homing our babies too (at least I do). ;) But don’t let that stop you from asking any questions you can think of….you can even make a list of them before you go over to pick up your new baby. I always enjoy when the new lovie owners have questions for me, and they are always welcome to pick up the phone and call me, or e-mail me if they come up with any other questions after taken their baby home.

Good look and looking forward to hearing from you,
Rubygem

Hi Eliza,

Welcome and you must be getting excited about the pending arrival of your lovie!
Just a few little suggestions to make the transition for you and your lovie easier....

Ask the breeder what type of seed mix/ and or pellets she has been feeding the lovie and either get some of that to begin with or ask the breeder if you can have some. Some breeders will even offer some when you purchase a bird ( I do anyway).

Find a good avian certified vet and schedule a well visit to get your bird checked out. Also look for the closest emergency vets nearby as well.

Read as much as you can, do the research and stuff yourself with as much information as possible :lol

You'll find an absolute ton of information on this board and everyone here is always willing to answer questions and help.

Good luck! ;)

Good suggestions, MJ. Ruby did give me a good supply of seed when I brought my boys home. :D And she's still supplying me with seed! She won't take my phone calls anymore though....do you think maybe I called her too much?

Eliza, yes, do ask your breeder any and all questions that you can think of...I did! Still do and she's always willing to answer them for me! :D

Who's your breeder? I'm from Atlantic County, NJ. :)

Ah, Atlantic County... I went to Stockton, helped open Borders in Mays Landing and used to live in Ventnor. Such a small world! In fact, I was in Atlantic City for a concert last eve!

Thanks for all of the kind words, folks! The breeder that I have been dealing with is just so sweet. She's been so helpful with questions regarding a good avian vet in the area, which was EXTREMELY important to me. I've owned exotics in the past (ferrets and hedgehogs) and learned very quickly how important an experienced vet can be. If all goes well, I will be visiting w/ the breeder Sunday (and most importantly, the baby!) on Sunday. I'll have quite a list of questions for her, I'm sure!

Thanks again for the warm welcome. I truly appreciate it :)
