Hello,

I have several pet birds. Lovebirds are new to me though.. My lovebird is a Black Masked Lovebird named Zora. I have no clue if what sex she is, but I call her a she any way. I have had her for about 5 months now.

I have lots of questions about Lovebirds! :)

Welcome aboard Zora and Owner !

There's invaluable information all about lovies within alllllll the pages of this forum. My suggestion is to get a LARGE cup o' tea, cozy slippers, reading glasses and START READING!:lol
If there's anything you need to ask, there's always one of the moderators or flock leaders hanging around, and we'll gladly help you out.
Now, I don't have experience with masks or blackcheeks (eye-ring species) but I know that Linda, our Grand Poobah, has good luck with determining the sex based on the shape of the eye(not the white ring around the eye though). I believe she goes with male = round eyes, female = oval eyes.
Anyway, have fun reading, enjoy the pics in the photo section, and holler when you need us !!
Good to have you,
Kim

Thank you for the warm welcome! That is very interesting about the eye shape. Since she is asleep for the night I don't want to disturb her, but I cant wait to get a good look at those eyes first thing in the morning. :)

Welcome Zora. I had a masked as my first lovie and they are so beautiful. When I get more money I plan on getting a masked. They are so beautiful(all lovies are to me though). I am owned by Baggy and Whisper two sweet and pretty lovebirds. Look forward to getting to know you better and your birds. Please if you can put some pitures in our photo section. Wouls love to see some masked pictures.

I have to revise my shapes! I swear Blu has almond shaped eyes but her head bobbing and regurgitating these days are throwing me off so much!

welcome on board Zora!
I have a blue fischer, another eye ring specie. those little critters are wonderful, so full of personality. you say you are familiar with birds but first time lovebird owner. Do you have other birds in your flock at this time?

Welcome to the board! Yep, as Kim said, read, read, read! :D And ask questions, too! :) The "Your Attention Please" section on the forum is where I'd start and then, go from there. I was totally new to pet birds when I adopted my peachie 2 years ago. I read for days and bet ya I know more about pet birds than lots of people who've had them for 20 years, :lol. Linda says that every single thing about lovebirds isn't on her forum but I've never had (or read) a question that couldn't be answered here! It's a great forum! :D Glad you found us! :)

Zora....what a cute name for a masked lovie. My name is Paulette I live in Missouri. I too would like to know what other birds you have. I have several different species including: tiels, lovebirds, budgies and zebra finches. I agree that information about the eyes is very interesting....and I just sexed a couple of birds from a photo with that information. I've been reading Vera Appleyard's book, The Lovebird Handbook.....I am very interested in the genetics, although it still confuses me, but little by little it's coming to me. Vera A. has a very nice way of explaining the base body colors and while I don't really care for the way her book is set up, it is a nice read with good information.....but anywho.....look forward to visiting wth you about lovies and other birds.....many people on this board are multi-bird households.....there is so much information to be learned.....and much sharing here at this fun forum. See you on the board.
