View Full Version : How do I remove the pit bull (lovebird ha! ) from my hand

This morning I went to change the water for jack and ruby and jack got a hold of me just under my thumb in the fleshy part of the hand. I screamed and yelled so loud but he just bit harder. Little @#*&! Is there any way that I can physically detach him from my hand besides wanting to choke him? ( not serious about that ) :lol I now have a nice bruise with 2 holes in it. >:

Oh man, do I know that situation. Imagine a lovebird clamped onto your neck and you get the picture.

Seriously, you remove a clamped-on lovebird by giving it something else to bite -- preferably, not your other hand. My Gracie is dowel trained for stepping up, and I always carry a dowel with me in order to remove her from wherever I don't want her to be.

You also just learned that yelling at birds doesn't help. :) It may relieve your feelings, but it won't unclamp the bird's beak from your flesh. I have also experienced the anger that rises from a hard bite. The best thing I could do was remove the bird and then hold myself absolutely still until the feeling passed. It's shocking to think of anyone feeling much anger when we are so much bigger than they are, but it's part of our own fight-or-flight response.

Does Jack always go for your hands? Are your birds getting ready to nest?

Best wishes,

The dna results should be in online today, so still not sure about heshe  . There are still 6 eggs and the hatching time should be around the 4th of this month  . I tried to candle them but I saw only some yellow and the air bubble, no veins. So still waiting     :grouphug1 . But thanks for the response it made me laugh. I could just see you

Yes, it was quite a sight. :D Gracie also had eggs, and it really makes a difference in her behavior. I had the cage door open; she jumped out onto my back, ran up, and clamped onto my neck.

When she was attached to me, I was fairly dancing in the kitchen. It was the one time I didn't have the dowel with me, so she detached from my neck by latching onto my hand. I eventually got her into a safe hold (safe for her and me), and we sat in the dark bathroom to calm down. If I hadn't done that, she probably would have clamped right back onto my hand after I released her into her cage.

Everybody with a nippy lovebird has got their own war story. That one is my favorite. If it helps anybody out, that's good too. :)

YEP! Some birdies really know how to clamp on don't they :x. Something that's worked for me in the past is to gently part their beak by touching the sides of the beak and wedging your other fingers in there. This usually distracts them long enough to detach.

Oh how well I know this feeling. I have had birdy earrings too. I try changing things so Baggy(my biter) has no access to fingers. She only bites my hand rest is ok. i guess just work on relexes..lol.

Steph-who knows these birds keep you on your toes.

With my two Pitt bulls/hens that bite hard, I've found if I simply ignore (which can be really hard to do) when they attach themselves to the hand and walk away from the cage, they generally stop. I've also gotten bites to the neck as well and they aren't any fun, but like Barb said, distraction works best to remove the offending lovie.
Jack sounds like a Jill to me

Amanda has a lovie that wants to be an earring; I have one that wants to be a nose ring. What makes it more fun is when he's hanging there by his beak, from my nose, trying to get footing, scratching the heck out of me with those little feeties.

Don't forget, several members have birds that want to be a nipple ring too.

Ha! My Paco is kinda like that; not so much that he wants to be a nosering, but that he wants to mine my nostrils from time to time looking for some tasty nose-candy. If I catch onto what he is doing too late and try to turn my head, he launches himself at my nose, trying desperately to lock on to one of my nostrils so his treasure cannot be taken away before he gets a chance to see what's available.

Icky little bird... :x

OMG that is too funny. Birds are just as gross as dogs if you give them the chance.

Ditto does that too! He likes to pluck nosehairs when he's not stuffing feathers up there. :eek

When he first came here he'd bite fingers, ears and lips. Barb used to laugh and yell when he did this, which of course just encouraged him. I would just ignore him and he figured out he'd not going to get the desired reaction out of me so he gave up. Now he just nibbles and licks. Barb on the other hand got bit every chance he got when she was here (she never managed to ignore him).

Hi,

I had one bird that was terrified of me despite my best efforts. When she would clamp down on me she usually drew blood (I think she purposly sharped her beak for these events). I would usually blow on her face/beak and she'd let go long enough to retriev my bloodied finger.

My recently lost baby loved to be an earring. Especially if he got jealous that a cell phone was using my ear. I usually would just wrap my hand around him and pul (VERY GENTLY) and he would get the point. The times that he bit my nose and eyelids (which was more of my Jardine big beaked monster's problem) were the most painful I'd have to say.

People on the other end of the cell phone line must have started thinking I had Turrets (sp?) because I would be in the middle of speaking and burst out with an angry &%@*# all of a sudden when he would clamp on to my ear.

Crystal
