I just found out that my birds may be causing my sons chronic sinus problems and possibly his asthma flare ups. His doctor suggested finding them new homes. I hate to ask this, but does anyone have room or know anyone who would like to adopt 4 lovebirds? I live near Tampa FL.
Have been raised together, however just recently split them up into two pairs, one pair had laid eggs. Fertile, but none survived. They were hand fed and are sweet, but very shy and scared of people at times.
Please let me know if anyone is interested. Thank you.

Colleen,
You don't necessarily have to get rid of them. Lovebirds don't produce a lot of dander and if you put them in a seperate room with an air purifier you might just be fine.

Crystal....what a good idea. Colleen is that a possiblility for you? I was socializing my babies yesterday....and as they are starting to get their colors....there are two that seem extra special out of the 5.....I'm wondering how will I ever give them up?

That is a possibility.
I also feel really, really, really bad. I have another posting in the breeding section, and to say the least, the first batch of eggs was a disaster. I was not expecting them to lay eggs, and definately not expecting none of them to survive. If they breed again, I dont know if my family can handle all this again. We were really sad. I love them to pieces and think maybe they will be happier with someone else. I am sure this sounds silly, but I really dont know what else to do.

Colleen,
I'm from the Tampa area. Tell me about these lovies. I may be able to take them or help you with them.

Colleen;
With all the humidity and mold in your part of the country, it would be next to impossible to say that the birds are causing his allergies. Your son would need to go through the testing (the one with all those needles) to find out specifically what he is allergic to.
You might want to see if your son's dr. could prescribe a whole-house air purifier; that way the insurance company could offset the cost of the installation. Whatever is causing the allergy would be trapped by the air purifier, whether it's from the birds or from something else.
That's my :2cents:. Hope all goes a little better.

I second what Barb said. In addition to mold (and there is a lot of it with all of these buildings that have water damage from hurricanes) there are a LOT of trees giving off pollen this time of year in Central FL. I have an elm that snows pollen if I bump it with the lawnmower.
It would be a terrible shame if you felt that you had to give up your pets, only to find that your son's allergies do not improve. Just my opinion. It's worth going for the allergy testing to pinpoint what the problem is exactly so you can treat it. That's what I ended up doing for my allergies. I still have some sinus problems, but I haven't had an asthma attack in years.

Yes, I agree, too. My son is highly allergic to cats but my bird slept in his room (he was in college at the time) for two years and he's had no problem moving back into that room. I did nothing special to clean it, just dusted and vacuumed. I now have three birds in the house and he interacts with them often and has no problems. I have no allergies (I went through all the test) but I do suffer in the fall, probably from ragweed and have sinus problems. My birds don't make it any worse for me. DIdn't I read somewhere that Lovebirds are far less likely to cause allergy problems than many other parrots? Less dander??? I do hope you can work something out, if at all possible. Good luck! :)

Thanks for everyones help. He did do the testing while he was under for surgery at 3 years old. Nothing came back as allergies though. His doctor just said she had a similar situation. I think your right about the air quality here lately, it seems that everyone is having breathing issues, asthma or not. I was not aware that a doctor can order a purifier. I will check that out regardless.
The lovies: ( I do not know their "official" colors, so I will just describe them)
Pair one: (My son named them)
Stitch- All yellow, with a peach face. The "boss", he is the oldest, will be
around a year in December. A male for sure.
Shrek- Light green chest and head, dark green wings, blueish tail, Peach
face. I think she is a typical peach face lovie. Thought she
was a male, hints the name Shrek. Laid the eggs, previously spoke
of.
Pair two: (Their colors are a little unique I think)
Donkey- Light green/white under beak and chin, little orange/peach above
beak and eyes. Various shades of light green thru out body and
wings, blue tail.
Princess-She is petite. Always has been a little smaller than the others.
White/Gray under beak, and cheaks. Chest is yellow/light green.
Yellow on top of head with a tint of orange right above beak.
Wings are yellow and dark green and a bit of blue on tail.
Ill see if I can find some pictures of the colors and give more info.
If someone was able to work with them a little more than I can on socializing them and getting them more used to human contact, they would be the greatest. They are all really sweet lovies, it is my fault that they have bonded to each other more and not me or other people. Once my work schedule changed, I did not consistantly work with them.

Okay, I searched google and found some color pictures. This is the best I could match up.
Stitch- Lutino
Shrek- Green Violet, not a regular peach face.
Donkey- This one was hard, looks the most like an Australian Cinn. Pied
Princess- Also hard, looks the most like an American Cinn. Pied

Colleen,
Check out the air quality option and see what you come up with. If you would like to place them with me temporarily, I would have no problems with that.

Thanks Linda, I will check it out.
I really appreciate your offer but would probably need it more permanent.
