Hello everyone,

I thought I had some experience with lovebirds and that after Houdini and Pontus and Nemo, I would be prepared whatever came. I never did imagine though that I would come to this section. Yet here I am and totally unprepared. It turns out sweet, tiny Pidget is a vampire, at least some times. Talk about looks being misleading .

He bites both inside and outside his cage, although from the feel of it, he does put more effort in his "I'm defending my cage" bites. Those can draw blood. As much as those hurt, I've learned my lesson and now take good care in cleaning mostly when he's out, making sure no exposed body parts are near him when I need to change something while he's inside and to move my hand as fast out as possible when I've been handfeeding him inside the cage and he's done. It's the out of cage bites that have me at a loss because I don't really understand why he does it or how to react. He doesn't do it all the time, mind you, but for example a typical bite episode goes like this. I'm sitting with him snuggled up in my hand (I could never do this with Houdini, so I loovve it :) ), and he's looking all fat and contented. I'm saying oh you're so pretty and he's apparently agreeing and then suddenly CHOMP, usually in my wrist or the back of my hand. I probably should say he pinches more than bites, but it still hurts a heck of a lot to not use the words I usually do in these ocassions >o . He also pinches my neck or my ears and even my forehead on one memorable occassion if he's sitting somewhere near those places and the mood to bite strikes him. There's been a lot of screaming and crying after the pinch episodes, and I must say that most of the screaming is on his part. He bites, screams like I've struck him or something and flies away. I don't understand  .

The problem is as much as I love having for once a rather socialized lovebird, I'm starting to lose my trust in him. I tense up when he flies over to me because I'm afraid he will bite me. I've been reading a while here, but I'm not sure what to do. I can't say no bite, because he doesn't seem to give much warning (at least I don't see any pinpointed eyes or raised back feathers or such) and he flies away almost immediately afterwards. Is there something else I could try? Thanks in advance for any help you can give us!

Hugs,
Gloria

Gloria: For me two things come to mind when I read your post. One is that my lovie Won Ton will be happy and content and if I talk sweet or the mood hits him he will sqawk and bite, but he doesn't do it hard which brings me to my second thought. I have two lovies, Squeaker and Bocephus that have no pressure control and they're bites hurt even when they are trying to just nibble.

I have several lovies that like to nibble on my face, ears, eyes, forehead, etc. Most of them do it gently and it doesn't hurt unless they get a little carried away. Now I always know when Bocephus is on my head and nibbling because it hurts like H#@*l and I sometimes scream because it's unexpected and very painful. I personally just live with it (I've gotten used to lovie beaks) and don't really get mad because he's not doing it to hurt me, he's just got know control of that beak. He is a very tame, handeable and loveable bird that doesn't really bite to bite.

As for Pidget, you may be having something similiar happen with him as my lovies. If he only squawks and bites you in your hand when you're talking sweet, try not to get him so excited. I love when Won Ton does this and will purposely keep talking sweet until he bites me . As for the other bites to your person, I would not let Pidget in those areas and just try to divert his attention when he's wanting to nibble on you. You may also give him something else to chew or play with when he's out with you.

Anyway, I'm sure others will have some more advice.

Gloria,

You described almost to a tee what Bela does. He is sitting there getting skirtches, looking like this it the best it gets, gets a little dreamy eyed and all of a sudden, WHAMO!!!! He nips me. He seems to do it mostly when I say something to him. I think I am interupting his moment of bliss, and it startles him a bit and he kinda freaks out, bites me and flaps his wings.

I don't know if that is exactly what you were describing, but it sounds real close to me. I just try not to disturb him while he's getting his snuggle skirtches, but he still seems to do a little jerk at times and then nip anyway. I guess maybe he's caught himself getting a little too comfy and jerks himself awake, startling himself in the process.

You can still say, "NO BITE" after he bites. You still want to establish that this in unacceptable behavior. As Laura said, ears, nose, forehead, eyelashes, etc... are just places they will nibble. Some places like the eyes I just don't allow, the others I try to say "Easy" in a soft, low voice, when they nibble/preen and it seems to work pretty well.

Now......... Ummmmm........ I'm still awaitin on them pics you promised ;)

TTYL,

Lori

Gloria, I've recently been initiated into the "bite" club and, like you, I have no experience with a bird that bites but what Laura said, sure does sound like my situation with Big Boi! All three of my lovies nibble on me but Big Boi doesn't seem to have a clue as to how far to take a nibble. Never seems mad about anything and is not in the least bit territorial about anything. I have two "fresh" marks on my neck....both from yesterday!

I can't offer you any advice, I'm still trying to get a handle on my situation. But, I did want to say I'm sorry you're getting those bites and hope they stop soon! Bites are no fun....no fun at all!

Hi Gloria,
Sounds like Pidget may have turned biting into a game. He bites, you react and he's satisfied. Depending on your reaction, if that reaction doesn't happen, the biting may subside. For the moment, I would not allow him to sit near your neck area, even though he may enjoy it there. Bites to the neck, face and ears can be very painful and I, myself, would have a hard time not reacting!

I agree there. Ditto used to do that with Barb (his first owner) all the time. He'd bite and she'd make a big production out of it. And of course he'd do it again. I ignored him and he quit doing it. Now he just does gentle nibbles. But when Barb lived here he would bite her like mad because she'd yell ouch and then laugh at him.

It wasn't always easy to ignore him but it did work, even though I wanted to scream obschenities at the top of my lungs.

Thanks for the advice you guys and I'll give it some serious thought. I will try not to react if and when he does pinch me again in case it's a game for him and I'm already not letting him snuggle in my neck. I hadn't thought about giving him a toy during the time he's with me, but now that I think of it, I should maybe always have his towel around. He likes to bite that too, and hey better old green towel than me ;). I will let you know how it goes next time he's out with me

And Lori, I will post some pictures of him soon, I promise. It's just been very dark lately inside what with the gray weather we've been having. The flash kind of washes out his colors and want him looking his very best when I show him off to you guys :). I hear him chirping in the other room right now, so I think he's taking a nap. It's snowing up a storm and he seems to like watching the snow flakes fall :) .

Oh and before I forget: HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all of you in the states. May you have plenty of things to be thankful for and lots of pumpkin pie and roasted turkey.

Hugs,
Gloria
