At the beginning, my fiance and I had 4 lovies. They are still with us and we love them very much! About a year ago, we rescued 6 more (10 total, yikes!) from very bad owners, hoping to find some good parents for them. Of the 6 new ones, we already found a good home for 2 of them early on (Thank God), but we still have 4 we REALLY need to find homes for. Like I said, it's been about a year already and no luck yet. My fiance and my schedules are getting busier and busier and we're starting too feel bad about not being able to give all 8 full attention. Sometimes we don't even spend enough time with our original 4! And cleaning 4 cages (2 per cage) even on a weekly basis, let alone every other day, is starting to get squeezed out of our schedules. This is not good for the lovies!

But anyway, I digress.... my question is, are there shelters or places where my fiance and I can find good homes for 4 birds? I've been hesitant to post ads on the web because who knows what kind of owners the birds might end up with, it would be like rescuing them from a bad owner only to give them to another bad owner. And one last note, of the 4 we are trying to find homes for, 2 have splayed legs :(. Are there special places for special lovies like these? They're pretty healthy, just can't stand up straight.

Help!!! We really need some good options for these guys..... it will be sad to see them go, but I think it would be best for all the birds :(.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm in California, about 40min Southeast of San Francisco.

I was just about to come back and edit my post to include my location, and then I saw your post :) Unfortunately, I'm in California, about 40 min southeast of San Francisco. Thanks SO MUCH for the quick reply. If you have any other ideas, please let me know too! Thanks again.

If shipping were an option for either or both of you, Continental Airlines charges about $100.00 for up to 7 lbs. A carrier and 4 lovebirds weigh less than that. Continental Live Animal division does a great job! I've shipped quite a few birds and all have arrived safely. :)

Yep,

Linda shipped Lacey to me that way, and they were awesome. I stood at the office for Continental and they hand delivered her to me as soon as the flight arrived.

I don't want to get in the middle, but if each of you split the cost of shipping, it would be a win-win situation. The four lovies would have a good home, and the cost would be minimal to both of you. Just a thought in the best interest of the lovies:2cents:

I would be interested in knowing more about them... colors? sizes? sexes?? personalitlies ??? Let me know...

I am not particular on any one color but would just like more info, about them! I dont know if I could take four but maybe 2!!!, and would be willing to talk about splitting the cost of shipping, especially since it is for the better of the birds!!

Sorry, the holidays were filled with family gatherings, I haven't had much time to post a reply. Just to give you some more details of the birds. Each pair are siblings.

The "non-splayed" pair are both sea green, they look almost identical. One of them actuually has one leg that is slightly splayed, that's how we can tell them apart, and even then it's kind of hard to tell if they're not standing up. We are not sure of their sexes, but we know they are about 1year and 3months old. No eggs yet, so they might both be male. One of these 2 is fairly friendly, considering we haven't had much time to play with them. He will not go crazy or dart away from you when you put your finger in the cage and tell him to get "up up." He is still a little shy and it might take one or two tries to get him on your finger. After he's out of the cage, he will be happy sitting on your shoulder. He's still a little scared of a human face so when you try to nuzzle or kiss him, he might fly away. The other one, the slightly splayed one, is a bit more testy. He's still pretty scared of getting on your finger but if you persist about a half a dozen times, he will eventually get on your finger. He is a bit more cooperative if you put him next to his sibling.

The totally splayed pair.... they've had a rough life. They almost froze to death when they were babies. We brought them inside from the cold and put them next to a heater (but not too close!) for a couple days and hand fed them until they got better. Their parents weren't very "parental" and they weren't provided a good nest. That most likely contributed to the splayed legs. Also, their parents, they were siblings, so we got some inbreeding going on :(. They are on the thin side, only 47grams or so. One is also sea green, but slightly darker sea green, and the other is more cinnamon colored. I'll post up some pictures of them (including the aforementioned sea green ones) in the coming days when I get some more time. These guys are just over a year old. They both seem pretty healthy and happy despite what I've described above. They play on their toys as much as they can with their legs and they like all the vegetables treats we give them. They have a few extra ladders in their cage to help them get around. They are both still a bit afraid, probably because when they were young, we tried a few things to "fix" their legs. Unfortunately, it was too late, they were already a month old when they were in our total custody.

If you only want 2, then I'd probably recommend the former sea green ones mentioned, unless you have a place in your heart for the "special" ones. Anyway, if you want more details, please let me know or PM me. And like I said, I'll post some pictures of them soon! Thanks for reading.

Mickaboo Cockatiel Rescue is near San Francisco: www.mickaboo.com. They rescue/rehome birds of ALL varieties, so that is an option to consider as well.

Best of luck!

Sorry for the delay in the pictures. The holidays got kind of hectic... but things are back to normal now.... still looking for some good homes for the little fellas....

This picture if of the older sea green ones mentioned above. The one hanging from the side of the cage is the one with the one *slightly* splayed leg. As you can see, he's a bit more shy. Oh, I'm using "he" to refer to the birds, but just to remind you, in reality, I don't know what sex they are. They are siblings.

This picture is of the younger inbred birds. Both birds have both their legs splayed, but they seem to be managing ok and look very happy. We've got 3 ladders in their cage to help them get around. They are more shy, but they've gotten a little bit used to us humans over the year. Also, with these, we don't know the sex. They are too siblings.

ejw829, thanks for the tip about the rescue home for the birds, I will give that a consideration.

prplecandl, if you are still interested, we can discuss it further, but don't feel obligated.... to be perfectly honest with you, I think it would be less of a hassle if I just found some local perspective owners who are interested, but if you can guarantee them a happy, loving home and still want to split the shipping costs, I'll be happy to oblige.

Well, we finally found a good home for the seagreen ones! Hooray! A kind family, friends of my parents, who has an adorable 9 year old daughter wanted some pet birds. They wanted a pet they could interact with but not something as big as a dog. Birds were perfect for them. You should have seen the little girl, she took the birds on a tour of their ENORMOUS house soon after be brought them there, it was so cute. And the mom is a stay at home mom so there would be an extra set of adult eyes for supervision as well.

Anyway, that's 2 in good hands, but these splayed leg ones aren't as "popular" as the normal seagreen ones.... We'll keep trying though. Just an update.
