He has become a very bitey little guy. I'll go out on a limb here and say it's because I have to give him oral meds via syringe twice a day. In the morning he gets one med and at night he gets three. He's pretty p***ed about the whole thing and my fingers are taking a beating!

I guess if someone held me down and made me take icky medicine by forcing a giant tube in my mouth, I'd bite them every chance I got, too.

Poor Milo :( Nothing will make you feel any better about sticking that syringe in his mouth twice a day. Have you seen any "good" changes in him since you started with the meds? Hopefully this will be over soon. :)

"Have you seen any "good" changes in him since you started with the meds?"

I have, actually. He's starting to act more energetic which means that the Baytril must be working on his bacterial infection. We have a week and a half to go on the meds and my fingers are already starting to look like hamburger from all the bites....

As for the plucking, he has his ups and downs. I've seen minimal picking since his vet visit earlier this week. But it's too soon to tell if he's done plucking for good, or just having a good week.

Poor lil Milo. I hope he gets better soon, for both your sakes!

Squeaker is not at all handtame and when I get him out of his basket everymorning I get two bites. One from him and one from Zimber who is mad about being bothered. Squeaker bites hard too! I'm willing to take the bites if it means he'll be with us awhile longer.

I really hope Milo gets better soon.

would this be a time when you could use gloves, or is there no situation when you should use gloves?

Hi Cheryl,
I never use gloves to avoid a bite, not even with my female macaw. If you take a look in our Resource Library, I've posted a photo that shows how to hold a bird so that you don't get bitten. Granted, this has to be modified for a larger bird but it works well for a lovebird! :)

I think gloves would scare the heck out of my little guys. Then they'd REALLY bite me!

We've only used gloves once and that was after about 15 minutes of wrestling our Meyer's Cookie in a towel to clip his wings. In that situation it was easier on him and us because we already had him in the towel and he was really stressing out. My husband held him and I clipped. The whole time my husband was freaking out because Cookie was biting through the gloves and it was hurting. It did only took a couple of minutes and Cookie was screaming right along with my husband. I NEVER use gloves with my lovies. I usually just take the bites or I wrap them in a wash cloth.

When Neaera was taking her meds, we actually got to spend some bonding time doing so. I held her close to my chest and just offered the syringe at the side of her beak. She would lick the meds out at her own pace, until they were all gone. Before the medicine session, she was a very wild bird, although not a hard biter. Now she is very tame, and I attribute that to the time we had together while she was taking those meds. I was also offering her lots of fluids by syringe, pedialyte mostly, and because pedialyte is sweet she would lap that up. She never knew what was in the syringe she was being offered, pedialyte or meds, so she was always good at lapping it up thinking it might be the sweet treat.

Whenever have to handle Grace, I wrap her in a small towel so she can't bite me. It has taken me some time to get used to handling her this way, but today I toweled her on the first try. It beats getting bit.

The resource library is the third forum from the top on the main page. :)

Lara, I'm going to link the main page to you. If that doesn't work, let us know and we'll give you the Lovebird Resource Library link. If this link takes you to the main page, look for the resource library in RED, 3rd down. You might want to book mark the link and that will take you to the home page each time you come to the forum. Hope it works for you. :)

When I go there the third item down is "support our community". Also...how can my son access the kids forum?

:omg:.....I have no idea what is going on! Support our community is No. 7 down on the home page. Kids forum????? I've never heard of that. I'll see if someone with powers (that would not be me, :D) can help you out. I have no clue why the link I gave you, which does open up the entire home page when *I* click it, does not work the same way for you.

OK, here is the direct link for the Lovebird Resource Library. Gosh, I hope it works!

Hmmm we do not have a kids forum unless I am missing something. The last link Janie did takes you right to the library. Try it.

Hi Lara;

This message board doesn't have a kids' forum. However, we have had some very young lovebird owners visit us. We tend to be very watchful of them for their own Internet safety, and answer their questions as well as anybody else's. :) Your son is welcome to post about his lovebird experiences on this board. :):)

Lara, thanks for that update! I was really baffled as to why you could not view the home page the same way I (we) can. Glad it's all straightened out. There is a LOT of great info. on this forum and now you can find all of it! :D
