Yeah, I think most are from the states. Poor birdies. :(

Sadly, there are many birdies out there in need of loving homes.
Letting birds breed freely is part of the problem, as is selling the young to unprepared owners.
New owners should be screened carefully, as no one here wants any of their babies to end up in a shelter awaiting re-adoption. New owners should also be given plenty of information on their new birdies, so they know what to expect and how to deal with their new pets. Robin has graciously written up some information pages that she allows us to print up and give to new owners. These pages can be found in the useful links section. Hopefully, an end will come soon to unwanted and abandoned pets.

Too true. The more the owners are prepared and given expectations of what a good birdy owner is, the more likely the birds will have long lasting and loving homes.
Someone called my husband yesterday to say they wanted a pair of our baby lovies as companions for a lovebird they have in their garage who is unhappy. My husband said NO WAY! Then he laid out for her what kind of home we are looking for for our lovies and suggested she go somewhere else to find a bird.

>:  The garage!! Maybe a call to the Humane Society would be in order >: It still amazes me how ignorant the human race can be. Doesn't surprise me you said "NO".

i can't image putting a lovie in the garage, there is no interaction with human at all and it's very dangerous as some wild animals might be able to get in there. i agree, somebody should call the humane society for investigation.

Although they may have the garage decorated/insulated like a house...
And yeah Shy, you're avatar is pretty snazy.

I know several people who have built beautiful bird rooms in unused parts of garages. Without more context, I wouldn't judge too harshly. From the context provided, however, it does not seem ideal...

Well my husband did ask several other questions and found out 1) their current bird is left alone in the garage and is only played with by children who are unsupervised, 2) the woman admitted that she didn't play with the bird, and 3) her bird is unhappy. Most importantly she was offended at my husband's expectations of the treatment our birds should recieve.

Aren't people amazing??????? I am floored by anyone who buys any kind of pet and then ignores it! Jackie and I were having that very discussion yesterday and think that birds, for the most part, get the worst care simply because most people who buy them think they will "look" pretty in a cage and with no knowledge of what they need to thrive and to be happy. This forum is the rare exception to that since we all want the very best for our birds but nearly every person I've met, outside of this forum, is stunned that I take my birds to a vet! And these people HAVE birds! Yep, sitting in a cage, looking pretty and totally neglected!
Jeremy, I did see some great looking garage bird rooms in BirdTalk so you're right, a garage, turned into a bird room can be a good place. So can a screened in back porch, :D!
Laura, GOOD DECISION our your and your hubby's part! :)

A poor birdie is unhappy. That is the only context that matters.
Thank you all for the avatar cheers. I had to get rid of the Christmas Angel, though it broke my heart to do it. She'll be back next year, me thinks.

Heck, I'd be tempted to ask the lady if she wanted to "get rid" of the lovie if it's so unhappy. It'd be a far better home than it's in right now.
Laura, I know that situation is not right for you at this time and don't want you to think I'm suggesting "you" do this. It's just a comment on my part ;)

I do have a lot of birds but Linda and MJ are way ahead of me and I don't think Kim (Kimsbirds) or Erick (Keltoth) are far behind them  .

Am adopting 2 more rescue budgies to pair with my "breeding without a nest box pair". My loveys are just fine apart from my Phoebe's picking and mutilating, her collar will probably be on for another week or two. Somebody told me about a bird naturopath to stop the plucking, will look into that.
