Hello everyone,
We just recently relocated to Atlanta and I have no friends or know anyone with whom I could I could leave my three lovebirds for a month :( . I will be out of the country from june 18th to july 18th.
So if you know anyone in the Atlanta area that would like to take care of 3 lovies please let me know.
I am willing to pay for this but I don't know how much, so also if you have ever boarded your lovies let me know what is the usual cost.
Ideally I would like to take the birds to a home where they can see people or other birds, instead of someone coming twice a day to my place.
thanks in advance for any info you can give!!

Hi, I am in Atlanta and my avian vet, "For Pet's Sake" does board birds BUT they must have a physical exam before they will board a bird. I don't know what the cost is. As far as finding someone to keep them in their home with their existing birds....hmmmm, that would be hard to find, I would think. Since any bird entering my home would have to have a 30 day quarantine, I know I couldn't do it. Another place that I know of that will board birds is The Aviarium which is located near Gwinnett Mall. They used to charge $4.00 per day but I don't know if that is still the price. They also require proof of a well bird check up from an avian vet.

I'm in the Atlanta area too. I have boarded my birds at "For Pet's Sake" and they are also my vet. As Janie said, they do require proof of a vet exam with in the past 30 days I believe unless you are a customer there and you have had you birds examined in their office. Since they usually get larger birds, the girls in the office played with mine so I know they didn't just sit in the cage all the time. They go nuts over my lovies :D Anyway, give them a call, I think it was $6.50 per day, but I liked the fact that they were at the vet's office in case anything went wrong. I'm a worry wart >o Good Luck!

Thanks for the referrals. I will call the places you suggested. I was planning to have them check up by a vet anyway so it will be better if I can do it in the same place i could board them. Janie, you are right, I forgot about the quarantine >o . he he you can tell I am sleep deprived...baby Irene is still waking up once per night and disrupts my sleep, but I am not complainig because she is a really good baby.
I still have time to look around and check the places before June. Boarding in the vet's office would be ideal, as Jackie says, if something happens they are there. But it is true that it might be pricey for 3 birds. well I will keep looking, who knows maybe i make friends with someone that loves lovebirds and doesn't have any at this time ;) .
thanks again!
Pollyanna.

Hey Pollyanna,
Good to see you again. I wondered where you had got to:)
Darn!!!! I wish we knew you were in the Atlanta area. I drove down and stayed with Janie this weekend for the birdfair, and a few of our members met up there. If we had know, we would have dragged you there with us:lol
Next time, OK?:)

Dear Lori,
a birdfair? sounds scary:D , I hear all this horror stories of people walking by and suddenly ending up with 20 lovies:rofl:
but next time sounds good to me. i have not been reading the board lately as i am so busy with life with baby and 3 lovebirds; however lately i have been managing better my time so i am having more free time to sit and read. I had no idea that being a stay at home mom was so hard but I am enjoying it very much. i will miss it if i go back to work.
see you around,
Paulette

Pollyanna.....I tried really hard to win that Better Homes & Gardens Dream Home in Atlanta.....If I had, I would have kept your lovies hands down for you for free. But since it was by computer I couldn't put the winning fold on my entry. I'm sure sorry. Hope you find some kind soul to help you out.

Hi Steph,
I have contacted the vet they suggested...very pricey for a month! so i am still looking. I still have time as i will be travelling in june. I also called the aquarium. that was cheaper but they only feed the birds, no time out for them and they are housed in a room with other birds and they don't ask for vet's check up , so that is kind of scary.
any suggestions?

Pollyanna....YIKES! That is not good news! I am stunned that they do not require proof of a well bird exam before they accept a bird! I am not surprised that they don't take them out and play with them since birds and their behavior are all so individual and I'm not really sure you're going to find a vet's office that will take them out and play with them unless you have a special person there that agrees to do it. I figured that if I did have to board at my vet's office, I would pay someone there "extra" to be sure my birds were allowed out and played with. I'll bet that is a real safety issue with anyone who boards birds.
I got lucky and was able to take my younger lovies back to their breeder for boarding. They were kept in her daughters bedroom and were played with several times a day. I paid her double what she asked for and I got double my money's worth! :D She even taught one to lie on his back and get a belly rub! :D Because they were still new to my home at the time I went out of town, I didn't even trust my family members to care for them because while they were tame, they were very hard to get back in the cage (except for by me) at that time. Oliver did get to stay home since he is friendly with every family member. I've never had to board him and at his age, I don't think I ever will. He is the type bird that would be better off here, alone, with my neighbor checking in on him 2 or 3 times a day.
I do appreciate the information you passed on about the Aviarium......I will not recommend them again. No health check is NOT good!
