View Full Version : Must find new home for 3 lovebirds.

I posted a similar thread several months ago, and had hope I could keep my babies. But, that is not the case. Please, if anyone is interested in a pair of lovebirds and/or a single love bird, please contact me.
I have a pair "Shrek" and "Stitch" and a single lovie who just lost his bud named "Donkey".
At this time, I cannot provide them the home they deserve. They are very sweet, hand raised by me, but have not been handled lately and get scared. They just turned 1 yr old, with the exception of Stitch, he is around 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old.
All are healthy and come with cages, play gym and food. I will try to upload some pictures soon.
I live in the Tampa Fl. area, and will be willing to deliver if possible.

Thanks Janie.
FYI
I did send her a PM. I am not looking to sell them, I just want them to go to a good home. I have to do some research on the shipping thing. If it is not too expensive and safe, I will consider it.
Does anyone have any experience with shipping?
Janie
06-24-2006, 09:57 AM
Colleen, Linda does and so does the breeder that I bought from. I "think" it's about $100 and that would cover one bird up to seven. So, you can ship 2 at the same price it would cost to ship one. My breeder normally uses Delta because when you live in Atlanta, that's just about the only choice. I think I've read that Linda likes Continental but she can fill you in on that.

Thanks for your help. It doesn't seem to be working out. I may just give them back to the breeder I bought them from.

Maybe that breeder can rehome them together? I hope something works out for their sake. Good luck and let us know.

Not to be rude, Kevin, but a 12 year old with 4 lovebirds is asking for trouble - you're looking at over $200 a year in regular vet trips and probably $500 at least on food - and where will the birds go when you turn 18 and go off to college? You might want to check with whoever would be paying the bills and make sure they are going to cover everything before you offer to rescue animals - if you wouldn't take in a rescue dog or cat, don't even think of taking in a bird just because it fits in a smaller space. Not to mention what would happen if they bred :omg:

colleen,
Have you found a home for your birds yet? I might be intreasted, and I will be happy to pay shipping and let you know how to go about getting that part done, because you can send them COD so no money will have to come out of your pocket.
I read over the thread quickly, so I didn't see if you knew their sexes....is the Lutino male or female...I know most of them are females....(unless you get lucky like Jackie and Lori ) I have a Lutino (proven male) that just laid eggs....:omg: I need another lovie like I need a hole in my head. but we always have room for one more, you can PM me or write to me at birds@shdybrk.com.
Thanks

Thank you, Colleen!
Stitch, Shrek and Donkey joined my lovebird flock this afternoon! Stitch is a lovely Lutino male and Shrek is a Jade Peachie. I'm not sure what Donkey is, as he won't stay out of his happy hut long enough!! :lol
I told Colleen if she decides she wants Stitch and Shrek back, I'm open to that in the future. Hopefully, I have a companion/mate for Donkey amongst my unattached lovies in my aviary.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I cannot say that enough. Thank you to all who were considering to take in my lovies and a great big thanks to Linda for opening up her home and heart to take them. My house is quite though, it is kinda weird. I know Linda, you will love and take good care of them. I am so excited for "Donkey", I know he was getting pretty lonely.
I am curious to find out what "Donkey" is. I will have to check back with you soon.
Thanks again,

I finally managed to "pry" Donkey out of the cozy this evening! :lol She is a Dilute Edged Peachie. I have an extra male Dilute Edged so Donkey now has a potential mate. Since she has not been in contact with other birds (she's from a private individual rather than a breeder or pet shop), I'm considering trying introductions this week-end to see what kind of reaction I get. Maybe if I exchange the cozy (at least during the day) for a mate, I may get to see more of her....

OHHHH, I am soooo excited.
I think Linda she will have no problem at all bonding with whom ever you decide to match her up with. She is pretty laid back with other birds, and as far as they cozy hut goes......she will probably treach the other bird to love it too, so watch out, you may have two disappearing on you. Donkey and Princess used to sleep together in there (and hide, and scrable, and whatever else they did). Well, not exactly that one, theirs was yellow.
Thanks again,
Colleen

Donkey got 2 things today....a bigger cage and a companion. She seems to like both!! The companion isn't too sure about all of this, as the cage is a different color and it's smaller.
However, they are a very nice looking pair. Donkey looks like a single dark factor Dilute Edged, while the companion is a normal. I didn't transfer the cozy...yet. Kinda nice to see the bird that lives in the cage! :lol

Hi Colleen,
Donkey is just so tickled to have a companion! I don't think she really even misses the cozy that she used to sleep in! I have Stitch and Shrek's cage next to my Parrotlets, Peanut and Kiwi, and they are constantly chattering back and forth to each other. Peanut is none to happy to have neighbors on that particular side of her cage and she voices her opinion very well. I'm repairing even a larger cage for Donkey. Hopefully, it will be finished this week-end. :)

That just makes my day! Thanks so much for the update. Your right, she probably does not remember the cozy! I am so happy for her, she is probably on cloud 9 and doesn't even realize there are people starring at her!

Donkey has started chewing paper so I opted to give her and her companion a cage out in my aviary, complete with clean nestbox. Her cage is right by the entrance so I can see what's going on without having to actually go out into the aviary and disturbing everyone. George's son knows exactly what to do and he seems excited about it. Both are Diluted Edged Peachies so I will get visual chicks, if any are produced. Let's keep our fingers crossed........
linda040899
08-01-2006, 04:31 PM
Donkey and companion simply love the cage in the aviary. I have to admit that I cheated a bit. I gave them the same cage that Donkey's companion had before I paired them up, so he's very familiar with it. While the nestbox is clean, it's the same one. Being lovebirds, where one goes, you will find both.........

Yeaaaah! That is awesome! How are Shrek and Stitch?
linda040899
08-02-2006, 11:51 PM
Hi Colleen,
Stitch and Shrek are doing great. I'm thinking about giving them a nestbox, as well. Stitch is actually a Pied Lutino. The facial mask has a jagged upper line so they will most likely produce pied offspring.
colleen1433
08-06-2006, 09:24 PM
Is pied good?
linda040899
08-06-2006, 09:39 PM
Hi Colleen,
Pied is not a bad thing. When a pied bird is bred, the offspring can be very, very pretty. Basically, pied shows as yellow or white feathering on a dark colored bird. Since Lutino is a yellow bird, the pied only shows in the facial mask. The amount of light feathering vs dark feathering determines light pied (few yellow feathers and a lot of dark feathers) or heavy pied (a lot of yellow feathers and not so many dark feathers). I have an open cage in the breeder section of my aviary and I may give Stitch and Shrek a box in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime, Donkey is beginning to set up housekeeping in the nestbox......

08-15-2006, 08:44 PM
Oh my Gosh!! That was quick! Do you know yet if it is fertile. Probably not I guess. I guess that proves she is a she. I did not have much luck naming them, they all ended up the opposite sex of their name. Well, at least I was consistent!
linda040899
08-15-2006, 10:01 PM
Colleen,
I won't know for about a week if any eggs that Donkey lays is fertile. A lot depends on Dragon. Hopefully, he isn't shooting blanks.
colleen1433
08-20-2006, 09:29 AM
Linda, anymore eggs?? Does she know what to do with them?
linda040899
08-20-2006, 11:13 PM
Colleen,
Donkey is now up to 3 eggs, none showing fertile yet. Yes, she's sitting on them and being a very protective mommy! Dragon is parent raised so at least one of them will know what to do should any eggs be fertile and chicks hatch. Since this is their first clutch, I'm not counting on anything at all.
linda040899
08-21-2006, 09:34 PM
As of tonight, 4 eggs, none fertile.
Janie
08-21-2006, 09:54 PM
:( Well, I know you were expecting that but still.....I was hopeful. I'm sure they will have better luck next time! :)
colleen1433
08-23-2006, 08:05 PM
Is there any chance that they can become fertile yet, or is it too long now?
linda040899
08-23-2006, 10:13 PM
There still could be fertile eggs in the nest but it will take a few days before anything shows. Dragon never produced any offspring with his first mate so he could actually be the problem. I'll have to check around the aviary and see if any of my other hens are sitting on any fertile ones. I may foster so that Donkey isn't sitting for nothing.
colleen1433

linda040899
08-24-2006, 08:57 PM
I have a feeling that Donkey would make a great mom, even if I have to foster fertile eggs to her. She's a great sitter and doesn't seem to be phased at all if I check the eggs. She simply moves over a bit, I do my thing, and she returns to sitting.
colleen1433
09-06-2006, 08:21 PM
hey Linda, how's it going? Any luck???
linda040899
09-06-2006, 09:09 PM
Hi Colleen,
Donkey has 4 eggs in her nest, all blank. I have a funny feeling that the problem is Dragon. I'm going to let her abandon the eggs and go for another clutch. When that happens, I'm going to look around the aviary and see who has fertile eggs that can be fostered under Donkey. I'm not sure what kind of momma lovie she will make, but I'm willing to find out. She's a darned good sitter............ ~sigh~

What a wonderful story. I am teared up over it, in a happy way.
What lucky lovies to end up with Linda and they look so pretty.

I decided to give Donkey a fertile egg from another nest. The hen that has the fertile eggs should be on breeder rest but she snuck another clutch in before I could do anything about it. I may give the other 2 fertile eggs to Donkey, as well and pull the hen that doesn't need to be hatching any more babies right now! Donkey took the egg with no problem and went right back to sitting...... :)

Cool, keep us posted! Im sure she will cont. to do well.
About the name...my son named them, he comes up with the cutest names. Of course however, he still insists Donkey is a boy. Being 6 years old, I have not had that in depth conversation proving otherwise.....yet.

Colleen,
Donkey is sitting very faithfully on the fertile egg and the chick inside is developing nicely. I'm keeping an eye on the remaining 2 fertile eggs from the original nest and I will give them to Donkey if the hen does not seem to be sitting as well as she should.

Hi Colleen,
After 2 blank clutches, one of which included a failed foster egg, I put them on rest. I don't think Donkey is the problem, but I could not go through the heartbreak of another disastrous fostering.
As for Stitch and Shrek, they are doing just fine. I've not given them a nestbox yet, as my eye sight has worsened and I'm currently awaiting a corneal transplant for my right eye. If I had to handfeed babies right now, I couldn't do it so I can't take that risk. I will try setting them up possibly late in the spring.
