It wasn't my fault. I was sitting on my stomach on my bed the other night eating brownie and Mijo (CAG) came over to investigate. Well as I mentioned in the past I think his last family gave him chocolate because he gets very determined to have some when there is any around. Anyway, he walked up and kept trying to get in my bowel and I would gently move my hand so he couldn't get to the bowel or I would move the bowel so he coudn't get to it, and the whole time he was doing this I was explaining to him that he was not allowed to have any chocolate. Well after a few minutes he looked me right in the eye and nipped my shoulder fast and hard   . It hurt really bad and it welted up. Yesterday I noticed there was a dime sized bruise where he bit me. They say greys have the emotional intelligence of a two year old, but a two year old doesn't have a BIG BLACK BEAK that can inflict thousands of pounds of pressure in an instant:roll:  .

My ekkie used to get coffee every morning from his previous owner. I've gotten nipped a few times when drinking coffee and not letting him have any. Part of the hazards of a second-home bird is the bad habits he/she picked up previously.

I've learned that Kiwi gets his own breakfast or a treat while I'm having my coffee. He can have an almond on the counter or his breakfast in his cage, depends on his mood, but he can't be near me when I have my coffee.

I would recommend the same policy when you have chocolate. Just don't give Mijo the chance to be bad, and you'll both be better off.

Hmmm,

Let me think????? You were eating chocolate in front of Mijo, and Mijo loves chocolate, but you wouldn't let him have any?????? Of course this was for his own good, but I know how I get when I want chocolate, so I kinda understand where Mijo is coming from:whistle:

Sorry, you got the nasty bite, but there was a lesson in all of this I'm sure. Don't eat chocolate in front of Mijo:rolleyes:

Gee Laura....it's never my fault when Big Boi bites me! :lol

Then again, if I were sitting there eating a big piece of millet (something he loves) I'd expect a bite!

OUCH!
Well, Laura, I'm sorry you were bitten.... but put yourself in his place (he had chocolate and you do not get any!)...

I don't handle food around Peepo. I can't handle her food or mine without getting a very excited nip. She does it from the excitement, although she's very well fed. Having been hand fed, she probably thinks it's ALL hers! No wait, she's a hen... Duh, it is all hers!

I'll stick with little beaks! They still hurt but they don't have the same potential as Mijo.

I'd bite ya too.....for not sharing! And of all things....chocolate!??!!!!

Sorry about the bite...they can be temperamental little stinkers.

I guess I can offer a couple of suggestions. Well, of course the first is don't let him catch you eating anything chocolate, but if he does, I always try to have a back-up yummy for them hanging close by that I can offer in place. Then I'll remove the "offending" food item...."out of sight out of mind". Maybe you can make something that looks just like the brownie, but isn't chocolate, and he can think he's still getting the forbidden chocolate.

MJ: Did you read the part about Mijo being an african grey? I don't think the out of site out of mind tactic would work for him. He really is that smart:rofl:  .

YEP! I guess it was ALL my fault. How dare I even consider having some chocolate without my birdymaster:rolleyes:  .

Good for you, Mijo.

You tell your momma that if she isn't going to give you any chocolate, that is fine, but she needs to give you something else yummy in it's place. She can't just say 'No chocolate, Mijo' and be done with it.

She will have that bruise to remind her that it is not very nice to eat yummy stuff and not give anything to Mijo.

She may need a new bruise every week or so to keep things fresh in her mind, too.

That sounds like it smarts a bit. Then again I'd bite too if someone wouldn't let me eat chocolate. Especially if it was a peanut butter cup.

I think we need to get Laura a spell checker. I can't be the only one who got a really disturbing image reading that story with bowl spelled like that. :lol :lol

 I did the same exact thing, Janie!
If I didn't get the disturbing image before, I sure got it now!
We don't need a spell checker, it would take all the fun out of razzing each other over those typos, right Lori? ;)

Heheh, too bad spell checker doesn't work that way.

I'm sorry to hear that you were bitten, Laura. It's a good idea to have Mijo's favourite snack out while you're eating yours, or to just eat yours in a separate room. My GCC wants anything I'm eating, and will fly onto my plate to get it. Even if I offer him an almond (his favourite), it either doesn't satisfy him, or keep him occupied for long. Hope you heal quickly.
