When Amaretto sits on my shoulder, she'll occasionally bite my earrings. It doesn't hurt, but it's annoying, plus I don't think it's extremely safe. Usually when she did it I'd gentley hold her beak and say 'no', which usually worked. Tonight, however, she wouldn't stop. I gentley held her beak and said no, but she continued to bite the earring. After I've said no a couple times, she gets really "into it", like she knows I don't want her to do it, but she's doing it anyway. What can I do to get her to stop? What about putting her back in her cage for a time out?

Earrings to birds are toys. It is best to take them off, as they can break them and swallow a piece. Lacey actually pulled a diamond out of one of mine when I first got her. I learned my lesson, off come the earrings before getting the birds out:rolleyes:

Yep, I'm with Lori on this one. As soon as I walk in the door, off comes any jewelry. Then I go get my birds out. As small of pieces as earrings are, I'm very cautious about wearing them around my birds. :2cents:

I can answer that....take them out! :D Seriously, I've read about that here for a couple of years but my lovie, Oliver, never did that. Then, along came Big Boi and Shy! Big Boi broke an ear ring in no time flat! Now, I take them out the second I open their cages! Not only can the break them, they can swallow them and choke on pieces.

We should have told you about www.removeable-ears.com (http://www.removeable-ears.com) LMAO !!!! Don't click...I'm just kidding !!!

Birdie will need to be taught that ears are off limits...even if this means that she's not allowed near ears for a while. Simply keeping her off your head and shoulders will deter her obsessions....Good Luck

Not just the ears! Blu likes over preening our ears. But the one I like the most is when she looks at my husband's "pin feathers" ( 5 o'clock shaddow), eyes it, slowly opens her beak, twist her head sideways, gets a hold of that nasty pin feathers and suddently twist and pull!
And she does that every night!

My solution to the earring thing was to buy small hoops with no backs, just the circles. Kameko would pull my earrings out everynight and i would have to wrestle them out of her beak. Now i don't really care about having just plain hoop earrings because i don't really care about my earrings so this may not be the best solution for everyone but works for me. Kameko took one tug, realized they wouldn't come out and has left them alone ever since. The ears, now the ears are one of the most painful places to be bit i find (although as Kameko chewed on my shirt once she 'accidently' almost peirced one of the girls  :lol... ouch), but just watch for a little lovie on your shoulder eyeing your ears and move her away or distract her. Sometimes thats not possible, but it is worth a shot.

I also wear loop earrings but my lovies don't really seem to have much interest in them. Not sure just why, as they are shiny.... The biggest problem I have with earrings is my larger parrots managing to get their toes through the loops. I have the clasp set to release before flesh tears or I would really be in trouble!!!

:D I always remove my earrings and watch the moment I get home. And as I have a cockatiel that loves to pull at my gold necklace chain, I put a silk scarf around my neck when it is "her turn".:)

My old job made me take out my earrings all of the time, so I ended up not wearing them for weeks on end. This led to my holes closing up, so I don't have to worry about birdies swallowing any earrings.

Jake and Sara used to pull on my earrings.....once they pulled the back off of the stud......I was shocked....I grabbed them and pryed their mouths open and eventually found the back on the floor.....after hearing all the horror stories of lovies eating the metal earring and having metal poisoning.....I just don't wear them around the birds anymore.

Is it a bad idea to let Tutti nibble on the back of a very thick gold clasped necklace?

It's probably not good for the necklace. Gold is a very soft metal, and Tutti could mess it up easily. I'd take the necklace off before bringing Tutti out.

good question!

You could always replace your necklace of gold for a one made of veggie tanned leather, beads and wood blocks and let tutti chew on that instead. ;)

It's best for the birds (and for your wallet) to remove jewelry when a hookbill is going to play on you.
