Hi there folks, its me again.
I hope I am not jumping the gun or anything but can anyone from the mentioned address tell me or enlighten at least about government rules and regulations concerning african love bird keeping in one's backyard or inside the house?
I am from the Philippines and we might be migrating to Canada anytime now, I just need to know if there are rules regarding rearing of lovies in your country.
To begin with, here in the Philippines, all you need to do is apply for a Certificate of Wildlife Registration or CWR, pay the corresponding fee and that's it.
Although I know I won't be permitted to bring in my lovies already, I just thought of the possibility in having to start all over again.

I live in western Canada, and the rules are national.
You don't need any sort of registration to own lovebirds, or keep them in your home. You also don't need any authorization to sell them.
If you were to bring your birdies over from the Philipines, you would need to enquire about quarantine laws, and such, but if you begin again, the laws seem to be more relaxed here than they are there.
Hope this helps.

Hi Shy! Thanks for replying. That's quite good to hear, not really as strict as some countries.
For now, I don't want to jump the gun as we are still in the processing stage and will be interviewed come August. Am hoping to be approved though and would look forward to moving there.
As for the birds, It would be a hassle for them since it would really stress them out; I would not want to take the chance since I might risk losing them to stress.
Maybe I will cross the bridge when I get there; decide if I can still manage to rear and breed lovies.
Thanks for the info again and I do hope to meet you folks soon. 8)

Depending also on where you decide to set up your new place, keep in mind that if you have close enough neighbors who complain about the lovies' noise, you can be fined for a noise violation. We're in Cambridge ONT and I would love to have my birds outside in an aviary during the nicer months, but I'd be evicted LOL

I live very close to Toronto, there are no rules about keeping lovebirds, however you will want to check with local bylaws as far as how many pets you are allowed to keep, some towns have different rules if you're breeding them etc. And of course you will have to check on the import laws regarding necessary quarantine times and rules, I believe there are some rules with exotic animals being brought into the country, as long as all your birds were captive born, I think your ok, but make sure that you have all the import and quarantine procedures and documents sorted out well in advance.
The other concern I have is if you are going to be living directly in Toronto and you plan on allowing your birds outside time, I would be seriously concerned about the air quality, especially in the summer, on hot days it can be a serious problem for some people, never mind a small bird with a sensitive respiratory systems.
Do you know where in the toronto area you will be moving to? I might be able to give you some more helpful information if I know the area.

Timmy,
The one person I know who can give you the information you need can be found on this website: http://www.ccpetshop.com The person you need to talk to is Fleming. He's an importer/exporter and he should be able to answer almost any question you have.
It's my understanding that quarantine in Canada is 45 days but it's home quarantine.

Thanks Kim, Jenna & Linda for the inputs.
If ever we do make it, we may be living in MISSISAUGA, not really sure about bringing the birds. I just might leave them here with relatives or eventually sell them. I find it risky since the trip would be stressful for them. Not to mention what Kim said about having neighbors who frown on noise, I would not want to offend anybody at that point.
Maybe keeping a pair of hand fed lovies would do. I hope and pray that we make it to Canada first before thinking about these problems.
