View Full Version : Flight induced Biter?

I've noticed that since Indy's flight feathers have started coming in, he's become more aggressive toward my hands. Just the sight of them makes him angry. If I'm covering his cage and my hand gets "too close" (a foot away) he lunges as if to say "Rawr! Get that thing away from me!' If I'm taking his food bowl out to refill, "How dare you touch my food!" -lunge- If I try to hook his bathing bowl onto his cage while he's facing me, -turn- "How dare you get behind me!" -lunge- If he flies over to me, -looks for hand- "You're ugly!" -lunge-

Crazy birdie. He hasn't bitten me, just lunges to bite. Either he's too afraid to go through with that sort of contact, he's bluffing, or he just has bad aim. But I don't know what I should do if he does bite me. Maybe it's because I'm softspoken, but if I say "No" sternly, he ignores me and keeps pinching. He tamed down a little from his lunging behavior and at the moment he's screeching at his reflection, trying to see who (between him and his "friend") is louder... I'm not sure if this is bad or not but I can't wait for the rest of his flights to come in so I can get my little poopers wings clipped...>o

I'm not sure if the aggression is caused by being fully flighted or just maturing. Lovebirds tend to be territorial about their cages (THEIR homes), and while females are more territorial than males, both genders have been known to defend their domains. Hey, if something strange came around your home, how would you react?????

I can understand being territorial, but what about coming over to me and attacking my hands outside of his territory?

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm having the same trouble with Bubble (see other thread in this forum). He had his wings clipped but they have grown back and he's recently "discovered" he can fly again. I'll be watching this thread with great interest!
