She always tried to bite me. It was hard to even get her food/water dish as she'd try to attack. After a year I pretty much gave up with her being tamed. She would attack the cat, and even went after the dog by running on the floor. This has turned me off from owning another lovie. :(

I'm sorry to hear that. My lovie was like that too, at first.

It may look evil, but it truly isn't. It's a defense mechanism. A wild animal, like birds are, may attack if it doesn't feel safe. Some birds try to hide, and others attack. Gracie was like that.

How was your bird's cage positioned in the room? Why was it out when the cat and the dog were in the room? These points can help us figure out why your dear bird was in attack mode so much.

Best wishes,

The cage was on a chain that was on the ceiling. But I had let the chain down so she wasn't that high up where it gets hot. But high enough away from danger. And mostly when she was out, she was out alone. But sometimes the cat would come in the room and just lay there(not try to attack the bird) but the bird would go over to them, land right in front of them and then try to bite 'em. And the cat would just look at her like she was crazy, but once she did bite my cat pretty good for no reason.

I would hate to see you discouraged because of one experience. There were factors involved in that experience that dictated the bird's natural behaviors. I have owned cats, dogs, fish and have been a bird owner most of my life. It is important to remember that birds are keenly aware of predators and even though your cat and dog weren't in attack mode, the bird still viewed them as a natural enemy. I have learned from my own experience over the course of 30 years that it is always in everyone's best interest to keep such pets in separate areas. Now, my two dogs can go anywhere in the house EXCEPT my birdroom. This helps the birds feel more secure and gives me a lot more peace of mind. Since your objective in purchasing a petstore bird was to get it out of that environment, you achieved the goal of providing it with a better existence. If you decide to try lovebirds again and you want a "velcro" bird, you really should purchase one from a reliable breeder and not a petstore. While there are no guarantees, generally a petstore does not handfeed or spend quality time with their birds. I'm sincerely sorry for your loss and hope you reconsider lovebird ownership in the future.

My dogs and cat are NEVER in the room with me when Martha is out. I have hunting dogs who love to chase and MAYBE eat birds. My cat loves to eat wild birds every once in a while so none of my animals are out at this time. It may get really annoying at times tring to get every dog in different rooms, but, it's better to be safe then sorry.

I am sorry about your birds biting. Maybe you should try and get her out, and every time it tries to bite you, lightly blow on it's face. It always works for my birds. Hope that helps and keep us posted!
