Can you share a photo of the split ring and the tool you have? I know what my tool looks like but not all of them are alike.

OK. Your tool is different than mine. Mine is used for metal bands, while the one you have is used with plastic. It will work with metal but the band will be a bit harder to close after it's applied. The link is to a finch site but the method is still the same: http://www.efinch.com/banding2.htm Basically, the tool is used to open the split in the band and keep it open until the band is slipped over the leg. After that, you gently press the ends closed.
