Default How to clean the oven without fumes?

Hubby has been helping me cook and now there is scary black syrup or something burned onto the bottom of my oven.

I have the self-cleaning cycle on the oven but I suspect it's not good for the birds. They sell the oven cleaner in the aerosol can, but ... again, not good for the birds. What can I use that's safe?

Cover stove surfaces with 1/4 inch of baking soda and spray with water until it is all damp, but not dripping wet. Let stand for an hour or so and wipe off. The soda will eat the goop off and there are no fumes.

There are also some orange cleaners on the market that work well on oven grease. Easy-Off or S.O.S. made a cleaner that was safe with birds, absolutely no fumes and I used that once, but I am not sure they still make it.

    Jennifer,
I have a self-cleaning oven and have/will never use it. The fumes are enough to kill me, let alone my birds!! I use baking soda and it works well.

Baking soda and water? Thanks, good tip I have an "un-vented" gas oven in my new house and I'm scared to death to use it. Anyone have tips or expierence with this type of appliance? Seems thats the type they are putting in most of the new houses these days.

The only time I use the self cleaning on my oven is when both Ditto and I can be outside.

You can use one of those steam clean thingies too. Just a bunch of hot steam and all the food stuffs come off.
I don't bother cleaning the oven...let it get all black, the birds are more important.

We built this house 3 years ago. This is the first time it's occurred to me that I should clean the oven.

We have used the self cleaner in our oven twice since adopting Oliver. Started it right after he was put to bed, upstairs in his own bedroom and with a separate ventilation system. Now that all birds are downstairs, right next to the kitchen in their birdy room, I'll try the baking soda.
